ModelArt P-40 M @ 1:72
I've been going through my old collection of ModelArt 1:72 models. This time around, I decided to build the P40 M.
I tried to document the entire build process step-by-step. So be warned, there are a lot of pictures. The first batch of pictures cover the assembly of the propellers, wings, rear fuselage half, front fuselage half. At this point the only part that gave me trouble was the front half of the fuselage. Lots of curves. |

Instead of using the recommended 80GSM paper, I used a heavier/thicker 200GSM card stock that I'm more accustomed to.
In this batch of photos, the parts I had trouble with were the guns. They were very small and I had to use two tweezers and a magnifying glass to get them into shape. |

All in all, the model was fun to build!
But you need to be very patient in assembling the front part of the fuselage. @MacSongLi Thanks! |

I'm very glad to see this exceptional build thread. You did a superb job on the model, and your step-by-step narrative and images are priceless for anyone hoping to build this kit.
I have been struggling with the nose assembly for some time, but am encouraged by seeing your success. However, I look forward to attempting those wing guns with guarded pessimism. Do you have any idea what unit this aircraft was assigned to? I assume it in a 14th Air Force China P-40M, possibly 23rd Fighter Group, but all the references I have on hand say that the P-40Ms were delivered and served in olive drab and gray, and not the previous green-brown-sky grey (see, e.g., Carl Molesworth, 23rd Fighter Group, "Chennault's Sharks," Osprey Aviation Elite Units 31, Oxford UK: Osprey Publishing, 2009, p. 123). RE: Nose Assembly One of the problems I had was trying to align the two formers in the middle of the nose component. It should have marked the back with a pencil prior to assembly. RE: unit I'm curious to find out as well. |
