Mig -21 bis build diary continued
Small progress with the mig-21 bis. The delta wings were
constructed and aligned with the fuselage to minimize gaps. Because of the relatively small span of the wings no inner frame is needed here and I didn't use the cross profile. The very slight tilt downwards can be adjusted with a small jig . The wings were filled with delta shaped cartons to match the shape and thicknes of them. Yair |

Mig -21 bis build diary continued
The main delta wings and horizontal tail surfaces were glued to the fuselage and the Mig -21 is starting to get it's well known typical shape. Next is the Vertical tail and the fat dorsale spine that is much fatter and broader then earlier mig -21 versions because the constant need for extra fuel to extend the relatively short range of the mig-21. In general all the migs had " short legs "because the concept behind them was local defence interceptor and not an attack plane. The mig-19 in particular suffered from short range because of it's two RD-9 afterburning engines which were everything but economical - therefore it always carried two big fuel tanks under the wings center pylons.

Another small progress with the bis. The dorsale spine which was one big piece was cut into two pieces to allow easier mounting as it is always a challenge to put it nicely in one piece.

The rear lower stabilizer was mounted and the part was needed some attention in order to merge nicely with the fuselage shape. The two upper wing small aerodynamic air profiles were glued near the wing tips.
