Messerschmitt BF109-G8 Modelik 1/33

Ok - so I've almost finished up the Gee Bee - but while I was waiting for some glue to dry on the last bits I got started on my next project over the weekend. I'm going to try and do a full-fledged build thread with this one - we'll see how I do with pictures and my camera. From what I've read, this is the same basic model as the Orlik BF109-G2 (same designer, different colors and armament). The G8 is a Reconnaissance fighter, so it has lighter armament but has cameras instead.
My review of the kit is here.
There is a build thread here if you are too impatient for me or want to see a more experienced modeler take on this kit.

Here you can see some of the basic frames and the frame assembly around the cockpit. I did make a small error that I had to correct for already. Part 1 and 1a are top and bottom of the main horizontal frame. I didn't think ahead enough and laminated part 1 to the full 0.8mm thickness recommended. That meant when I put 1a on the bottom it was too thick. Looking at how things go together, I centered everything on the bottom and had to take a sheet of paper thickness off the former pieces that get glued to the top. We'll see how well I did when we get to wrapping the formers

This next picture didn't show the colors well enough - but brings me to my next dilemna. The cockpit interior is a washed out grey / olive drab combination - that I was unable to come close to matching at the local hobby store. In order to match the color I'd have to mix paint every time I want to edge color. I'm debating using a brigher OD color for the edges, and probably painting a few fiddly bits completely in order to avoid this - but I'm still debating this one.

Good start, Dan! I have been there recently - having to peel off a laminated sheet! Does make me a believer in laminating as opposed to using thick cardboard (because lets face it, I will not learn from my mistakes and I will do it again)!

Hi Dan,

welcome to the club !

Very nice to see the next modeller, giving this build a try. I nearly finished the G-8 and if there are any problems for you - just give me a call I will try to help.

The interior colour is difficult to find or to mix. I´m using watercolour pencils from Faber Castell. The Code is Grey Green No. 172 mixed with 25% white.

Good start, don´t mind the layer problem, but check the * symbols before gluing !

Will be back again,

Jörg

That wouldn't bother me
I had a family night with the wife and son last night, so no more progress to report today.

Small update today - although I'm not getting the color to come out well. I probably need to try a white background instead of my purple mat. I also hope that my good camera comes back from repair soon - I think that will help.

Keep it up, Dan. I withdraw from my offer to start building this one, because I have other 3 projects before this one.

I'm surely going to use your thread as my guide. Thanks!
