Ut-1(Ут-1) 1:33 orel

Hello everyone!

Welcome to my new report.
I am going to make soviet trainer UT-1(Ут-1) from OREL.
Model seems to be quite easy. In this kit we have 2 pages with parts, 6 drawings and short history (in Ukrainian/Russian) of the plane.

I found some mistakes in kit which you can see on pictures bellow.
Ut-1(Ут-1) 1:33 orel-20160807_100915.jpg
Spots where you must cut out and stick parts A and C (also B) are at the bottom in all these parts.
Ut-1(Ут-1) 1:33 orel-20160807_105700.jpgUt-1(Ут-1) 1:33 orel-20160807_105810.jpg
Sides of part 14 are shorter around 4 mm than they should be.
Ut-1(Ут-1) 1:33 orel-20160807_110902.jpg
Different color tone of part A and B.

I've decided to skip for now parts 1 and 2 which are parts of the prop and I moved on straight to the engine.
There was small mismatch in part 4, but after quick sandpaper therapy everything was ok!
Ut-1(Ут-1) 1:33 orel-20160807_123050.jpgUt-1(Ут-1) 1:33 orel-20160807_171855.jpgUt-1(Ут-1) 1:33 orel-20160808_192720.jpg

I decided to replace part 6 with cover of electric cable. I think result is a little bit better than flat part imitating pipes.

Now I am working on part nr 3 which is cover of the engine.

Looks like an excellent model of this good-looking airplane. It has a real 1930s classic look to it with the exposed engine, landing gear spats, and red and white color scheme.

So far, your work is up to the high standard you have previously set. Very clean and precise craftsmanship.

I appreciate your narrative and many images, including the description of your corrections to the kit's errors.

Very good to see you tackle this model. The original aircraft is very pretty, as already remarked by others.

It is particularly good of you to make a list of existing mistakes in the kit. There has already been another thread, at the German Kartonbau forum, which tried to do that. The thread is here. It seems the mistakes in the kit became a bit too much for the builder from that forum, since his build has not been finished.

In that thread there are a couple of posts in English which would be worthwhile to go through, since they mention a possible source for the two-seater UT-2. It is a modern, vector, repaint of an old (1964!) MM version. The English posts are here:

Post 15

and here:

Post 17

These posts also mention the fact that the same model is available from Ecardmodels. It is most likely much cheaper, and has the advantage that you can extract a vector original, which would help in fixing mistakes of the original kit.

Curiously both models (Oriel & Kampfflieger) are by the same author. The layouts differ, but mistakes remain the same between the models.

I wish you luck with the work to make a proper version of this model. I have gone over it quite a bit with the intention of making a 1/16 scale version. Your work would help a lot towards that.

Thanks for you effort in advance! - Leif

The proprietor and principal designer of der Kampfflieger, Roman Vasyliev, is member of this forum (Forum name: kampfflieger). I think it would be a good idea to send him a private message and let him know about the corrections. He may wish to incorporate them in the ECardmodels downloadable version of the model. In any event, I think he would be glad to know that one of his models is under construction and may have some advice.

Hi,

I was quite busy with work and other things, but I haven't forgotten about my UT-1.
I haven't done much but I am close to finish whole body. Currently model looks like on the pictures:
Ut-1(Ут-1) 1:33 orel-20160814_214825.jpgUt-1(Ут-1) 1:33 orel-20160814_214834.jpgUt-1(Ут-1) 1:33 orel-20160814_214927.jpg

I will work more with the body, coz I'd like to have better line of the plane.

In this kit you have only one frame that connects parts of the body(part 21 and 22). I decided to connect these parts by small paper stripes. I used cardboard 0,2 mm of thickness.
Ut-1(Ут-1) 1:33 orel-20160814_170445.jpg
Coz this move I had to cut frame D just a little bit and then put it inside. Next I stuck both parts of the body together.

After that I've cut around 2 mm from the inside cover of cockpit (1mm frontside and 1 mm rear) to give some space for my paper stripes and frontal frame.
Ut-1(Ут-1) 1:33 orel-20160812_160343.jpgUt-1(Ут-1) 1:33 orel-20160814_182437.jpg

Next step that I took was stick inside of the cockpit to the main body.
Ut-1(Ут-1) 1:33 orel-20160814_214910.jpg

Once I finished, I realized that there are some mismatches and gaps. But I think it's not a big problem to deal with it (sanding and putty).
Ut-1(Ут-1) 1:33 orel-20160814_214817.jpgUt-1(Ут-1) 1:33 orel-20160814_214947.jpg

I am going to finishl cockpit and wings now.

Thank you Don
I try to make this report as useful as possible for others.
And I hope that designer of this model will check this topic. Maybe he can correct some of the mistakes.

milenio3, plane is small even it is in 1/33 scale. But it's still a piece of nice plane :D

Thanks for the links Leif. They are useful. I also found one report on one Russian forum. pictures in those 2 reports are very helpful.

Thanks, Yoav and Diego, for kind words

Lukas
