1/144 YA-10 beta build
Well, about six months ago I posted the last thing I had built, the Imperial Shuttle,
I decided it was time to build something. Being a retired A-10 hawg dawg (crew chief), when Bruno (scissorsandplanes) released his A-10, I knew the path I would take. Having built a super detailed A-10 and YA-10B conversion in plastic, I always wanted a YA-10, and here was my chance. With the help of John Bowden, who gave me the outlines and some markings to work with, I started to modify the kit. There are some significant differences in the YA-10 at its roll out ceremony, and production A-10s. I will talk about those as the build progresses. Here in the first few pictures, I have started on the fuselage. Pic 1 is the parts and glue strips. I cut off the integral glue tabs, and printed a second copy on bond paper to allow a smoother transition between segments. In Pic 2, these are some formers I made from a cross section view I found. I wanted to attempt to give a little more defined shape to the model. With this idea, I also had some missteps, which will resolve themselves as I build further versions. Pic 3 is the completed fuselage, and Pic 4 is with the canopy installed. Here, we talk about one of the first things that make the YA-10 different. I did not install the 30mm cannon parts, as GAU-8 30mm cannon was not yet ready, so a 20mm cannon was built into the aircraft.

Oh boy! Another miniature masterpiece by the master of miniatures. You're off to a great start Ray. Looking forward to updates already.

Excellent project, Flyboy! And a great airplane (see below).
I look forward to following your progress with this one. Think you will be able to display it next month in Sterling? Dogface "The Army view of close air support, in the Korean War or any war, was explained to me in the spring of 1967 by MSgt. Rodney Baker while the two of us lay behind a rice paddy dike in the Mekong Delta. Sergeant Baker said, 'I agree with Bobby Kennedy. We should stop bombing North Vietnam.' 'Why?' I asked. 'Because I don’t want to waste any of it. I want it all, I want it now, and I want it in that tree line right over there.'" [Donald W. Boose, Jr, "The Army View of Close Air Support in the Korean War," in Jacob Neufeld and George M. Watson, Jr., eds., Coalition Air Power in the Korean War, Washington, DC: U.S. Air Force History and Museums Program, 2005, p. 99, available at http://www.afhso.af.mil/shared/media...100924-016.pdf] |

I'm confused. Formers at 1/144 scale?
There's no way my fat fingers could build something like this. Great start Ray! Gary

Engine pods
This installment, I present the engine pods.
Construction is straight forward. I replaced the rolled card engine nose cone with a 2 mm dowel sanded down to fit and painted white. This presents a more rounded, closed nose cone. I did find that the formers for the fan/exhaust turned out a little large. I will have to trim them down in future builds. I believe this is due to the way I added joiner strips, and did not trim them enough. Here is the completed engine pod, and installed on the airframe.
