Great build of a unusual subject - the crowd reaction at the 1937 fly past at Tushino can be imagined.

Apparently stability wasn't an issue - there were complaints about the lack of control authority of the vertical surfaces at low speeds and some longitudinal instability at speed. Neither of these were considered to be show stoppers.
It had been intended to produce an initial batch of K-12s but the OKB was dissolved and Kalinin arrested before this happened.

Charlie

???

Longitudinal instability is not an issue? I kind of think it is. You don't want to wobble in a plane for hours or try to keep it stable during a bomb run.

Flying wings while being an efficient airplane, have control issues that requires good control to make then viable. Today it makes perfect sense since the planes are computer stabilized and fly by wire.

We haven't got access to the original flight reports to judge how bad the longitudinal instability was. The flight behaviour can't have been too bad since production of the design was to occur. There seems to have been more concern about the defensive armament than the handling.

Not all flying wings had control issues - the Horten brothers' wings seem to have been free of the instability that plagued other designs. The Lippisch designs, while not classic flying wings, were more efficient and better handling designs than most conventional aircraft. For example, it was impossible to put an Me 163 into a spin - the stall behaviour was so benign.

Took some time this weekend and finished this one up.

The framework for the glazing just did not want to fit without judicious modification. Much time was spent trimming and repositioning all the pieces for better fit.

So, this whole project started out simply but quickly escalated into a challenging and skill developing build.

From learning how to vacuform to the complex control surface linkages, there were plenty of challenges and some frustration.

The glossy paper and its dislike for CA glue did not help matters. Paint was my friend.

Anyway, I don't consider this my cleanest build by any means, but I am still happy with the results.

Thanks for following along.

Outstanding work on this strange and colorful airplane, Greg!

Wish you could show it to us on 1 April, but perhaps you will be able to attend one of the other paper model exhibits this year.

There is no way to make April 1. I have to be in Wichita for business the following week. I am contemplating IPMC this year.

Best I can do with my current schedule.
