Avro Lancaster 1/33
Hi all
Thought I'd give it ago at starting a build thread. This is the little monster I have chosen to build in 1/33 scale. I intend to have engine in the pods, all control surfaces working, various bomb loads that can be fitted in its bay. Her number and ID will be: - EM H RF144 I chose this, as the chance of another person building her was slim I have got some way with this as I have had it on the drawing board for a while now. I'm no computer buff so a lot of it was originally started on paper. The good old fashioned way, well all of it Just now getting it on to the my system now. While building this I will show how I got to and through each stage without the use of any of the normal design programs ( I have not got a clue how to use any of them). The only ones I have used so far have been MS Paint and the download from Paint.net Hope you like it Regards Rob |

Hi again
When I first came up with the idea to do this, I figured it's going to be big. So I sat and worked out how to brake it down it to sections. I looked at how they did it in the factory when they built them, I could see no better way than how they did it. In the drawing the red lines show how I have broken the model up. It does say on it 10 sections, I have counted both inboard engines as 1 section and the outboard engines as another. They have different engine mounts and oil tanks, plus the inboard engine mounts blend into the undercarriage, that will be a nightmare for sure. More soon if you can take it Regards Rob |

Hi again
The drawings below show the basics of how I got the starboard outer wing profile and ribs set up. The reason the ribs have been place in the positions they have is to support the engine and working surfaces when fitted. I have printed these off already and tried a basic test fit and so far all seems well. The only problem I'm having is knowing were to stop adding stuff. The next update will show what I mean Regards Rob |

Hi Don
It is a big one and won't be quick in the making. The good thing about braking it up into sections is you can work on any section you want to. It can get a bit mind boggling just doing the same section all the time (I have the attention span of a garden worm) Below is the basic bomb bay almost finished. In the last update I said knowing when to stop adding stuff was hard, well here is an example of that. I did the bay to the point of colouring it and thought hay presto done, nah I came up with the idea I might be able to give it some depth by cutting out all the sections Worth a try, it might just work!! The attached photo is the main one I used for most of the detail. Well enough of me for tonight as it 1.30am and my pillow is calling me Take care Rob |

You certainly got yourself into a major project especially if you not using any software to develop surfaces. I think you will have lots of challenges with fitting parts. secondly, most British WW2 bombers were painted black color on the bottom and that will make any details practically invisible, so my suggestion is to find a color scheme that is lighter on the bottom. In any case, I would love to see your progress especially the gun turrets and the cabin. Isaac
