Macchi C.202 Instrument Panel

Hola mis amigos

Hope you’ve all had a good Christmas?

OK, my last card project went really well (BF109 instrument panel). It inspired me so much, I want to make another!! From card and paper (and a little clear plastic) of course.

With this in mind, my next project is an instrument panel for a Macchi C202 fighter of the Regia Aeronautica during WWII. Something like the item in the picture below:

I decided on this particular aircraft instrument panel as there is very little information on it and there are few surviving aircraft around the world. This would make for interesting research with a degree of difficulty.

The scale will be 1:1 (full scale as before). I have a dropbox account which I will store all the work in; people can view this link at anytime. It’s in my Signature block titled Macchi C202.

My reference material will be from the internet and from a few books I have purchased, see books below:

Panel Templat

PM's

My first headache was finding information on the panel and the instruments. Unlike information for the BF109 Project, info is lacking. I managed to obtain the parts catalogue for the Macchi C202 which gave me an insight into the basic shape of the panel and where the holes for the instruments were.

My next piece of luck came via an original aircraft Clock (Sonia). I found an article which described the clock as being 65mm across.

Likewise the only instrument I found measurements for was the Variometro Gauge. The drawing showed the gauge to be 79mm in diameter (the bezel which would be seen through the panel) which would suggest a hole of 80-81mm.

Armed with this info I blew up the basic panel drawing (obtained from Przemystaw Skulskis’ Macchi C.202 Folgore book, page 88) until the hole for the Variometro Gauge reached 80mm respectfully. I now have a panel template, see below:

Sonia Clock

PMs

First instrument: Sonia clock

The Sonia clock has many pictures and snippets of information on the Internet which made this item my first construction piece. See real item Sonia aircraft clock below:

I designed the clock face and the body using free Serif software:

It was then a case of printing off the design, sticking it to card and cutting it out:

Plastic layer next for the glass face:

Sanded smooth:

The base came next and was constructed in the same way:

Paper was applied to the sides and trimmed:

Clock construction

PMs

Clock continued:

The two components were next painted black:

The clock face was then test fitted to the face:

From the start I wanted this clock to work so the centre section had to house the clock workings. I found a company in the south of the UK which supplied workings of the correct diameter:

The handles are prints of original handles glued to card:

This is the interesting part, I came across this stuff on the net:

If you apply the glow paint to the numbers below:

You get this in the dark:

The centre section is still in natural paper and will require painting:

So far the clock is keeping perfect time:

Enjoy

Wow, and the ride begins over again. How you do not make a fortune with this I do not know, aviation and collectors would just about get by without dry cleaning once a week.
