Spitfire MK V diorama

Hi friends, I'm building a Spitfire MK V diorama with pilots and crew fixing the engine, and I start building the engine model of Alin Osarik's Rolls Royce Merlin engine 1:33 scale its an interesting model and design, the assembly diagrams are very helpfull but some parts need more details for the correct place, but if you study all the diagrams you can find the rigth position pf the piece. In this case I've prefered to paint the model engine to have a best result bue to lot of small parts to paint the borders, even the pipes are made of paper, here are some pics.

I built Alan's Merlin engine in 1/16th scale for display. It has won a couple of IPMS trophies. It was a challenge -- lots of greeblies* -- and I stand in awe of anyone who tackles it in 1/33. Building a 1/16-scale cutaway Spitfire cockpit to go with the engine is one of many things on my "Build-It List."

I didn't have any major fit problems with the engine; the kit is really quite good in that regard. The one place you might have some difficulty is with the housing of the rear of the engine. I had to cut down its width (fore & aft) to get the engine to fit properly in the engine mount and against the firewall.

Your firewall looks good. I'll enjoy watching your diorama unfold.

Cheers,
--David

* greeblie (n., possibly Gaelic): in paper modeling, a fussy little part that will disappear if you sneeze.

There are severals parts taht are a bit hard to understand the assembly also they are too small but I love the challenges and this is going to be a good one. O had to do a woring axis becouse I want the propellers spin in the model.

@Sakrison - Your engine is a fantastic piece or art, I use your images as a guide also, in 1/33 scale all pieces are "greeblies" I have to be carefull to not sneeze!

@Erik - thanks! I'll try to do all my best in this diorama!

Regards

Amazing job! Your pilot keeps on running (very well done too!), he can't wait to jump in his Spit and roar across the skies with a newly fitted engine.

My hat is off to you to be making this in 1/33! I see you got the engine inside the frame....I made this in 1/24th (still too small, I think) and like Sakrison, couldn't fit it into the frame because the blower (or whatever that round thing on the back is) was too big! Just hung it on a hoist for display. You have done a very nice job.

thank you all,

@ WVA & Sakrison - well yes the model seams to be designed 100% mesured from the original becouse I also had problem to put the engine inside the frame but after forcing a litte bit could fit perfectly, the rear part (I think is the air compresor) fits ok for me, could be that in 1:33 all match perfectly and when you re-scale it lost a bit of symmetry?

regards
