Hello friends,
it's a long time ago, when I was here. I miss the pic in the last two posts of mine???? Here some little progress, the last three pics show the possible construction of the central bearing. And the first five show a paper model of the mechanism (how I think it works...).

this is probaly a bad choice of words but to me the viking is the most elegant military aircraft ever designed

Hello friends,
@herky, that's right, that's the reason why I try to build this bird! @Mike1158, thank you for nice "WOW", but what does "Dood" means? I'm not familiar with spoken english. the game comes into motion... pic 1: wing upperside not folded pic 2: wing downside without hull pic 3: another point of view. pic 4: slowly folding (because we are looking from downside, the folding is in the direction away from our point of view). pic 5: more folding... pic 6: folding ready. pic 7: another point of view. problems? a lot: 1) to find the right length's of the rod system. 2) I don't get the paper stiff enough. 3) the distance between the rods must be enlarged 4) the axles are papermade, because the metal ones are difficult to produce 5) after drilling the holes for the rods, the paper is strongly stressed, so it segregates in single layers .

I just love to see mechanisms in the models. Not easy work.

Hello friends,
I now build in all rods (6) and as axes I used a styrene filament (1 mm diameter). pic 1: wing foldet pic 2: another view. pic 3: less folded pic 4: more less folded pic 5: wing is read for take off. pic 6: view from upper side.

Hello friends,
some time passed by, because complicated construction are a reason for me don't doing it... But I overcome my personal obstacle and here are the pics. Some words to the sixth pic: The red ellipse shows the correction that the wings are folded with the right angle. The green ellipse shows the fold line and paneel lines (I'm a little bit proud of it they are well done). The blue ellipse shows the correction (left) and the fold line (right, but not well done, it is a wider open gap, but the paneel line is correct). The seventh pic shows only that not folded wing held his position, but my viking isn't allowed to fly a looping, that would be bad idea...

Hello friends,
the left wing is finished so far, the right one is for the future. The kit comes with a cover (half cylinder) for the hinge. I cannot use this, because then the wing couldn't be folded. I construct my own "stealth"-version for this cover, the radar profile will decrease for 0,003 %, modern times (@charlie chaplin)! I append some hydraulic and structures (not very authentic) inside the wing, but in a way, that it looks "technical" for me. @Mike1158 and @Isaac, thank you both for your nice words. pic 1: cover upon the wing unfolded pic 2: cover "opens" when folded pic 3: entrails

This is excellent! You have done a lot of engineering on this kit. It has been a pleasure to follow your narrative and to see the images.
As I mentioned early on in your build, I have a fondness for this aircraft since I had a flight as a passenger in the US-3 version from Atsugi Naval Air Station in Japan to USS Carl Vinson and back in 1990, including one trap (carrier landing) and one cat (catapult launch). I even had the chance to sit in the right hand seat and handle the controls in flight. Don |
