guys, I bought a cutting mat from staples, but...when I cut paper over it, the blade still left a few marks/cuts on it, is this normal?

Your model looks very good so far. Not bad at all for your first attempt at this.

The cutting mat should be self-healing, but in reality, some heavy marks will remain. I bought my first mat a couple of years ago, and as a designer and builder, I have really put it to the test, and its still going strong. I do have to point out that I turned it over and am now using the other side. So, the mat has a double life.

so I didn't get ripped off, unfortunetly, I bought it at a higher price than other mats of comparable size :( anywho, I attempted to build the huey and messed up badly when I accidentally cut main rotor blades in half, incorrectly shaped the front of the heli etc but I forgave myself because it's just a piece of paper

YOu're doing pretty good actually!!!! Why don't you try your hand at free models??There's whole lot for you to try before you take on something bigger!!! All models I've built so far had been free and they taught me a lot from day 1. My first attempt at an aircraft (Which I am yet to complete) was a free kit from ModelArt. That way you're risking even less And btw, stay on it...You're bound to get better...Just take your time building, never rush a model no matter how simple it may seem Good Luck
