Dell B-17 C in 1/72nd

HI Folks,

These dang paper models are so fun to make...here I am starting another one. My son got me this Dell download for my birthday and I've scaled it to 1/72nd. So far, so good. I'm especially pleased that there are alternative tabs included for edge-joining the skins which I tend to prefer. So far, everything lines up almost perfectly!







I'll start rigging the R.E.8 soon...just couldn't help starting this one destined for my office next to the Dell B-24!

Thanks, Folks! I agree...this is so much fun. So far, this little kit has gone together with very little drama. Really a pleasure to build. And in 1/72nd, just enough structure to make it sound. I was kind of worried about simply scaling down from 1/48th but so far, no issues to report.

I got the rest of the fuselage (almost) done tonight and we'll see what I can get done tomorrow. Really starting to look like a B-17 now. Only trouble is my cat likes it and keeps batting at it on the table. May need to hide it tonight!

Beautiful work, Dan. I always liked the shark fin B-17s. Hope to build one of these in 1/72 myself some day. What thickness of paper are you using?

As John points out in his introductory information that comes with the model, this aircraft, A525 (WP-D) flew with No. 90 Squadron RAF and was shot down and lost with the entire crew during the attack on the pocket battleship Admiral Sheer at Oslo, Norway, on 8 September 1941. The aircraft commander at that time was 22-year-old Canadian Flying Officer D.A.A. Romans.

A good source of information on the RAF Fortresses is Phil. H. Listemann, Allied Wings No. 7: Boeing Fortress Mk.I, available from RAF in Combat.

Of course, John has every book ever written and every film ever made about the Flying Fortress and can make other recommendations, but I like this short and well-illustrated little pamphlet: lots of photos and drawings and very detailed operational information. I think it describes every single combat sortie of RAF Fortresses by Bomber Command (90 Squadron) May 1941-February 1942; the Middle East detachment under 37 and 38 Squadrons (October 1941-May 1942); and Coastal Command (220 Squadron) February-July 1942).

K wonder if John will some day release one of the Coastal Command Fortresses in the extra dark sea grey and extra dark slate grey uppersides and white undersides?
