These RAF Fortress Mk I (B-17C)s had a wide variety of paint schemes. There was apparently a lot of experimenting with various camouflage. The image below from a set of decals shows just a few. I hope to do some more of these. Only one Fortress Mk I went to Coastal Command. It was used in various electronic experiments. See profile below. It is on the “to do” list. I also do plan to do some Coastal Command Fortress Mk IIa (B-17E)s and Fortress Mk II (B-17F)s as well as some Bomber Command Fortress Mk III (B-17G)s.

That is a good book Don. I also recommend this book if you are interested in B-17s in Coastal Command…

Now back to back to Dan’s excellent build.

Thanks folks...a tiny update for today! I got the tails on and they look neat. The only mistake was that I was so excited to add the fin that I forgot to add a little structural slice that helps keep it from being flat. Still looks ok, though and I like how the whole thing is starting to look like a real plane!

Maybe the tub and starting the wings tonight...Dan

Very clean work. At that size the missing former isn’t worth worrying about. I look forward to continued progress.

I was mistaken about the number of Fortress Mk Is being transferred to Coastal Command. About half a dozen actually ended up with them.

I thought you might be interested in seeing the photos below pertaining to AN525 and her crew. There is still wreckage of the Fortress Mk I at the crash site as well as a memorial plaque. The crew is buried at a local cemetery with one of the Fortresses propellers displayed as another memorial.

That's so cool, John. I'll be around Oslo in August to visit some of my wife's family. I may try and figure out where this is!

More on the pretty plane tonight.

All,

Started to add the mid wings. The left side went on great. Can't believe how well the fillet fits. Design, design, design!

I also added the belly gunner's position and the tail wheel as well as the nose glass. Hopefully I can get the wings completed this weekend!

Cheers,
Dan

This is an outstanding build! Keep the pictures coming.
You've discovered what I learned awhile ago . . . John Dell models are excellently designed and the graphics are unbelievable! They are truly a pleasure to build and look fantastic when finished, especially with all the crew members, ammo boxes, test equipment and stuff he adds to the kit.
