Cool Horizontal stabilizer

The F-104 uses a T tail configuration common to many designs of the 60's ( did you know that this was a German concept design? The Focke Wulf TA-183 had it and everyone else thought it was a great idea and copied it ).
It is
also a preferred arrangement for aircraft having rear mounted engines ( like the one I am working on here in Canada; see picture below ).

and the skin

glue by wrapping around the frame

now its ready to go on

The horizontal is snug fit to the fin

Note:
at this point do not glue because it will be damaged during the further work to be done. You may leave it off later on and at the very end, either snug fit again or glue in place.

a little fun with movable fin

Good thing to leave the horizontal stabilizer off for the time being. This is indeed a delicate part of the model.

Regarding the forward main landing gear doors, you're absolutely right. However, I chose to mount them in open position knowing this is the unpressurised actuator maintenane position. Moreover, this keeps the inside landing gear bay details visible.

The way the landing gear was retracted, the rods along the main struts by which the wheels were turned to make them fit in the narrow bay and the opening/closing sequence of the doors is quite interesting for this aircraft. I must say that the model provides good details to imagine the entire dynamics. Even if you haven't seen it in reality, it's still clearly imagineable how it works. That makes the landing gear a vulnerable part of the model though so be careful...

One thing I wasn't too sure about is the position of the main strut actuators (pulling the struts forward during gear retraction). The picture that you sent to me at the time indicates these are in a more outward position at the strut (somewhere halfway), then indicated in the instruction drawings. The outward position seems to be more logical: Less momentum (force) required to reel the struts in. I corrected this during the build.

See that the fuselage doesn't look so weird anymore with the transition from oval to round, and going upward towards the exhaust now that the tail is in place ?

Regarding the struts and actuators

Use the photos the kit is not correct

Smile Wings

what wings? Those are tiny little stubs for carrying external fuel tanks

The reality is that this plane was designed as an interceptor for long range bombers and never intended to dog fight, so really it only needed lift at low speed such as take off and landing. At Mach 2, there is enough lift just from the fuselage. Since the wings were so thin, they held no internal fuel at all.

So here it is:

Internal frames
F-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3885.jpgF-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3886.jpgF-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3887.jpg

dry fit the frames to the mating stub spar on the fuselage
F-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3889.jpgF-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3891.jpg

the small stub on the wing bottom is to align and glue to the wing pylons.
F-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3890.jpg

Now add the wing skins
F-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3894.jpgF-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3895.jpg

and glue to the fuselage.
F-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3897.jpgF-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3899.jpgF-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3898.jpg

These have been the easiest wing build ever.

Cool Flaps and ailerons

The kit provides those as separate surfaces so they can be posed in various position.

Note:
During takeoff and landings when the flaps are lowered, the wing leading edge slats also deploy down to form a curved wing shape. However, this kit does not have separate slats. This is a very easy fix to separate them ( really do not cut the upper skin, just the lower one and bend down a bit ). However, I just got a bit lazy and decided not to do it. If you look at the GPM kit, they do have it separate.

Here are the flaps and ailerons

and on in various aileron positions

Wink Wing center pylons

This model has under wing pylons at the center.

The pylon have an internal frame that fits onto the small stub at the bottom of the wing
F-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3922.jpgF-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3923.jpg

Glue the frame first making sure that they point straight down to the ground and not angled ( they are not perpendicular to the wing which has a sharp anhedral or down slope when viewed straight on ).
F-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3927.jpg

Then slip the pylon skins over and glue in place.
F-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3930.jpg

simple!

Once again the separate control surfaces really add a lot of detail to the model.
