Right, the GPM kit has separate slats. But the wing structure is much less elaborated than in this kit.
I noted the wire that crosses the fuselage. It seems to be a very good idea, as the wings are so thin!

It is always important to beef up the wing support. here a metal wire does the job beautifully and it goes thru the fuselage like this ( one piece bent in the center fuselage and use Super glue ).

Even though having separate controls is more work, when it comes to flaps, it adds so much.
some planes it makes no difference especially if you never see them in a dirty configuration, or if they are supersonic since the spaces between the controls and the fins/wings are very tight.

In reality, for the F-104 it would have been perfectly natural not to separate anything.

also, for this plane since it flew many times without any external fuel tanks or missiles as well, you can stop there and just admire this jet powered rocket.

That is what makes this hobby fun.

When we meet in June, I will bring the finished plane.

Cool Main landing gear struts

Kit parts call for 3 layers of card wrapped by the exterior skin.

My version has a metal wire bent to shape and sandwiched between two of the card frames. All is cemented using Super glue

then cover all 4 sides

and install in place using super glue again

I'm on vacation this week, so I can spend a bit more time building

Cool landing gear actuators and links

here is where we dress the legs a bit

and a really small detail of these two tiny circles ( tie down rings ). I just rounded soft wire and glued in place instead.

Red face wheels size

This is where I thought I was ahead of the game by purchasing the resin wheel set for the F-104

here are the kit part
F-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3943.jpg

and the resin wheels
F-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3944.jpg

Wow, there is a big difference and the resin ones look too small
F-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3945.jpg

So I got on line and found that the size of the F-104 main wheel tire is 26 x8X14 or 26 inches diameter. So at 1/33 that translated to approx 0.78 inches. The resin wheels are about 0.600 or closer to 1/48 scale. Oops, wrong for this kit.
F-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3952.jpg

So basically I got to make the wheels using the kit parts.

More fun work

Exclamation Main gear doors

There are two doors per landing gear struts. The small back ones are riding with the struts and the forward large ones in front actuate separately.

Here are the doors, nice lamination
F-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3962.jpg

actuators glued to the doors to ease assembly
F-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3963.jpgF-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3965.jpg

small aft doors in place
F-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3966.jpg

big forward doors attached.
F-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3967.jpgF-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3968.jpg

and here it is looking as if the aircraft is on its gear
F-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3969.jpg

but wait,

the kit shows the forward doors wide open which is wrong in normal operation. On the ground and when the gear is down, the forward main doors are partially closed and only open briefly during retraction or extension as well as maintenance work ).

so here is what the real plane doors look like on the ground
F-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-f-104-main-gear-doors.jpg

and here is what they should look like on the kit.
F-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3970.jpgF-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3973.jpgF-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3974.jpgF-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3977.jpgF-104G Starfighter- Kartonowa Kolekcia 1/33 scale-img_3978.jpg

so all the work on the forward door interior is unseen

We are having fun here.
