SSW R1 Kamplfflieger 1/72nd
All,
My son got me this guy for my last birthday and I figured I'd give it a go. I have a soft spot for these huge German monsters having build the Roden Staaken with much modification several years ago. My intent is the put this one together as a test to see how things fit and then modify it with an interior and clear glazing etc. We'll see how it goes. So far, things are ok. I did add a balsa spar in the top wing for both shaping an airfoil and to make sure it was flat. I've also adjusted the tabs so that my seams are butted and not overlapping. A couple of things of note: I have no idea how the front radiator section will go on the nose and actually look nice. I'll need to play with that a bit. Also, the nose section somehow transitions into a square and matches the "B" former you see in the photos. Just trying to figure out the physics of that little operation! And yes...I put the "B" former in upside down, but it's just a rectangle so no real harm done. On to the initial shots! It's actually quite small in comparison to the Staaken and has a special ugliness all its own! More soon... Dan |

Those magnificent man in their flying machines
I am not a WW 1 expert and never heard of this plane, so I googled some images and here is one plastic model I saw .
SSW R1 the other pic is of this model on eCard I must admit it was designed by railway engineers that wanted to fly. Glad to see that you are using wood for the wing structure. Otherwise the whole thing will sag. You can go wild with details of this model, but I see you going the simpler route. Fun stuff!!!!!!!!!!! Isaac

Thanks, Folks! Now it's coming together quickly. The tails are on and the rear triangular fuse parts fit great. Very cool.
I think I'll put the whole thing together and then figure out how to fix the nose parts. More soon, Dan |

Ahhh, the German WW1 R-plane monsters! I have a copy of Putnam's "The German Giants" and the subject is fascinating. The SSW R1, with its unique fuselage, is one of my favourites.
It is looking great I wonder how much time the rigging will need. At 1/72, it must be a nightmare... |

While not quite in league with the R-planes, you are aware that your next project MUST be the Gotha G.I, aren't you? ;-) Can't have one without the other.

Struts and bottom wings are a go! I haven't added the parts that the prop hubs attach to as I'm still working out how those parts actually go. It looks really neat, though. What a machine!
I'll work on the rest of those struts tomorrow and maybe start the landing gear. Long Live the R-Planes! Dan |

All,
I added the prop supports and landing gear (except for the main spreader bar). One of the things I didn't like about the design was that those parts are filled in with black and not open as individual struts. So, I cut the black out and added the struts without the filler. I was a bit worried, but everything seems strong and ready to rock. We'll see how it holds up after a while! I'll work on the wheels tomorrow and add some extra struts near the back of the stabilizer which appear to be missing. I REALLY hope I can get the nose to look as nice as the rest. Cheers, Dan |
