Avro Spider in 1/33 from Wagner Models
All,
I am trying to make a neat WWI subject and trying 1/32nd sheet balsa as a backing material for the formers and spars. So far, this thing fits like a dream! Here is the "kit". And the parts glued onto balsa and the basic fuselage finished along with the seat. Neat-oh so far. We'll see what happens when I start skinning...which is where I usually mess things up! Cheers, Dan |

Looks great so far, Dan. Great use of compatible media (balsa and paper are a natural fit) to build this rare Avro.

Great job, Dan. I bet balsa is easier to cut than 1mm card!

I tried this once...gluing my wing formers to balsa sheet instead of cardboard.
I thought the same thing "it will be easier to cut". While it is definitely easier to cut, I had a lot of difficulty following the patterns. The knife would try to follow grains and paths in the balsa. I made a mess of a few of the parts. So, I have never tried it again. Maybe there is a better quality of balsa wood I could try. Because it still seems like a good idea for internals.

I've tried balsa in the past and found if the part is not too intricate it's preferable to sand rather than cut to shape. Also consider the grain direction very carefully as otherwise it may split and make you say #@*&$!

Dear AirDave and others:
Try Bass wood in thin sheets the grain structure is much more even than balsa wood. Make sure the blade you use is sharp and go thinner wood as bass wood is stronger. Across the pond it is Linden wood Old time wood carver, Miles |
