Douglas C47 Skytrain Arctic 7
I've been away for a while guys. But I need to hone my skills, so I'll be warming up with this fun Fiddlers Green C47 build. Enjoy the awesome Canadian paint scheme!

Nosecone is all finished up. I'm not really a big fan of petaled nose pieces, and this model was no exception. The petals didn't really come together too well, so I had to improvise and color in a scrap piece of paper to glue to the inside. I'll probably design a piece to go on the tip of the nose near the end of the build, as Photoshop and AutoCAD are malfunctioning on my computer. ARGHHHH!!

The main cabin is done! The plane is starting to take the classic DC3/C47 shape without any formers. The tail is next.

I haven't seen this FG model made up before, so I'm following your build with interest Aleem. Looking pretty good so far. One small comment ... The famous FG thick edge lines are in evidence. Their models can look so much better if you trim these edge lines right off.
My Skytrain below isn't by FG (It's one of Bruno's), but the Waco behind it is. Very much reduced to go with the 1:300 C-47 though. Comparing the wingspans, I reduced the Waco a step too far I think. One day I'll try it again, but I'm not looking forward to building it's MB Jeep load again.

That looks awesome Johnny! I'll take that advice into effect in all FG models I build after this one. I won't trim the rest of the lines off in this model so that everything looks consistent.

The tail is complete and attached to the rest of the parts. This fuselage is done and looks awesome. Wings or horizontal stabilizers next? I can't really decide...

Just as a further advert for Bruno's 1:300 mini wonders ... A Dakota in civvie livery. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the 'Skytrain' name only belongs to the C47 military version. Of course, to us Brits they were ALL Dakotas.

Whoa!! That looks fantastic. I'm pretty sure they only C47's were considered as Skytrains, but I'll consult my aviation books when I get home.

I didn't know FG has DC-3 in this livery-I might have to look into it.
It looks pretty good however I would use different technique to do fuselage. Like you I'm not a fan of petals since they never come together as intended.Petals or tabs on fuselage joints I would cut out and join fuselage sections using 1/4 inch wide strip of paper glued on inside. The disadvantages of that method are that it doesn't work well with paper thinner than 87 lbs and I have to use white ir some other water based glue. btw-how thick is the paper you are using? |
