Exclamation A bit of information

The F-84 was a product of the US Army Air force request during late WW2 for a jet fighter. The Republic company was one of the contenders. Initially they studied placing a jet engine into a P-47 Thunderbolt. But that turned out to be a bad concept. So they decided on a clean sheet design. Thus the F-84 was developed into a slick very thin fuselage with straight wings. It was ready to fly two years after the end of the war ( in 1947 ). It competed against the Lockheed P-80 and the North American F-86. As it turned out the Army Air Force allowed production to all three aircraft. However, the straight wing of the F-84 and the P-80 were already obsolete and inferior to the Swept wing F-86 Sabre. So the next step was to design a swept wing version. That has become the F-84F Thunderstreak. This aircraft was also distributed widely to all NATO forces and that is why it became a recognizable aircraft.

So the quality of the paper that Hobby Model printed kit is poor/ questionable or generally not very good. I had worse.

The problem that I see is that the paper is very sensitive to glue, does not round or handle well when forming.

I would not rate them as poor. However, it is a common theme with some of the printing houses in that the paper quality should be much better. So I would rate them average.

When I print kits at home I use special card stock that I purchased while in Japan ( I am am down to critical levels though ). I just can't seem to find it in the states. The stuff available commercially is also average.

Smile The parts and kit

The kit design is good and relatively uncomplicated. It also has minimal internal framing that is common to so many new designs. I guess since it is round sections that are simply joined, there is no need to too much of internal structure. The kit is a repaint and small modifications to their earlier RF-84F and F-84F kit.

As stated before, the printed paper quality is average and could have been better. In any case we shall see as the build continues. I think that the final product is an attractive looking model at average complexity. There also will be a compromise between metallic paper and just varying shades of gray. I personally do not like the metallic silver paper, so this kit is good for me as is.

In addition to the kit itself, I purchased the laser cut frames, canopy and resin wheels. So the build will be easier for me to build. However, a quick look at the model and I can see that it is not too difficult to do without all these extras.

Cool Lets build

Here are the fuselage parts. All simple and easy to cut.

Smile Start at the back

I decided to start at the back for a change.

Here is the exhaust duct.

Once the frame is in, I added super glue bead all around the tail area to make it a bit stiff ( per Yoav's method ).

Then round the aft sections

And add them going forward. And add the exhaust duct.

You said it all about the paper. It delaminates/disintegrates with appalling ease on small radius curves and the slightly shiny paint is extremely sensitive to white glue. The “dubious” term was a dubious mean to try to be soft on the subject
