Cool Wheels

Its time to move onto the wheels

please note that there are small parts still left to be attached to the fuselage, but those will be broken off since there is so much more to finish with the undercarriage and external load.

First a reference photo showing a frontal view of the Kfir landing gear arrangement. I will use this for reference in the shaping of the wheels, the struts angles and the door placement.
Kfir C7- Yaron repaint of Yoav Kfir C2-frontal-view.jpg

The wheels are made of laminated card. I use a circular cutter for the individual discs. The are a bit larger in diameter than the finished wheel because they will be sanded and shaped.
Kfir C7- Yaron repaint of Yoav Kfir C2-img_6306.jpg
Kfir C7- Yaron repaint of Yoav Kfir C2-img_6307.jpg

I then placed a stack in the gear bay for a check (nothing worse than wheels that are too big for the bay).
Kfir C7- Yaron repaint of Yoav Kfir C2-img_6308.jpg

Now glue the stack to the correct thickness using the sketch provided in the kit ( there will be lots of checking ).

Now comes the fun part of shaping the wheels. For me, I mount the part on a mini lath spindle, but you can use a hand drill or rotary tool.
Kfir C7- Yaron repaint of Yoav Kfir C2-img_6312.jpg

mount on the spindle
Kfir C7- Yaron repaint of Yoav Kfir C2-img_6313.jpg

mounted on the lathe ready to spin
Kfir C7- Yaron repaint of Yoav Kfir C2-img_6314.jpg

and shaped using sand paper and sanding sticks

Kfir C7- Yaron repaint of Yoav Kfir C2-img_6317.jpg

now they are ready to painting. I insert a tooth pick that has one side crushed using pliers. The toothpick is then used as a handle to hand paint the wheels.
Kfir C7- Yaron repaint of Yoav Kfir C2-img_6319.jpg

Now paint the wheels. I use Tamiya black rubber paint.
Kfir C7- Yaron repaint of Yoav Kfir C2-img_6320.jpg

check again in the bay
Kfir C7- Yaron repaint of Yoav Kfir C2-img_6322.jpg

add the rims and brakes
Kfir C7- Yaron repaint of Yoav Kfir C2-img_6323.jpg

Looks good!

Thank you for this tutorial Isaac ! I didn't know there was actually a specific color paint for rubber
Great work with that Kfir !
Can't wait to see it complete with your other IAF aircrafts.
Best regards,
Ronan

That's a great manual you have showed us here Isaac. A very effective way of making wheels.

Very nice work on the wheels Isaac....very good job.

But what's your story with the wheels, which you measure every time inside the bay?
Are you planning a movable landing gears, or a plane taking off?

waiting to see the finished model.

I just like to see the wheels in the bay because there is good contrast. Nothing special, just sharing the photos. One time diameter check is all you need.

Cool Landing gear struts

The upper nose gear structural assembly has wood dowel that is cut to shape and glued using super glue at the joints. It is then covered up with the card.
Kfir C7- Yaron repaint of Yoav Kfir C2-img_6327.jpgKfir C7- Yaron repaint of Yoav Kfir C2-img_6328.jpg

and the upper gear is installed
Kfir C7- Yaron repaint of Yoav Kfir C2-img_6330.jpg

now it is complete and in place
Kfir C7- Yaron repaint of Yoav Kfir C2-img_6334.jpgKfir C7- Yaron repaint of Yoav Kfir C2-img_6335.jpg

Main gear struts are metal paperclip cores that are wrapped.
Kfir C7- Yaron repaint of Yoav Kfir C2-img_6329.jpg

now wheels are added
Kfir C7- Yaron repaint of Yoav Kfir C2-img_6331.jpg

note the tilt angle
Kfir C7- Yaron repaint of Yoav Kfir C2-img_6333.jpg

and installed

Excellent job on the landing gear, especially the nose gear reinforcement! Your extensive research and preparation really pay off, Isaac. Well done. Looking forward to the continuation of your build.

Cheers,
Erik
