Bleriot XI (GPM - 1:33)

Actually I started this plane like 6 years ago. It was a prize I got after winning
in a paper model category in a WWI contest at Swanny's forum back in 2011.

But I abandoned it almost immediately because I realized it was far beyond my skills back then.

I recently went through my unfinished projects, and found I still had this nice little kit.

Some parts had been laminated...

And the truss had been started...

There were several trials, with varying degrees of failure and utter failure:

But since virtually all the other parts were there, and my skills have improved since then I decided
to reconstruct the truss of the fuselage. However, my attempts using cardstock failed again.

So I decided to use some pre-paper I had at hand:

I have an idea on how to make the rigging. Hopefully it will look much better now.

But it will take me some time. In the mean time, I hope to finish the cockpit before the
fuselage can be closed in the following days or weeks:

I'll try to keep this build as simple as possible. No fancy things here, just to enjoy it.

Thanks for reading!

Great work! I assume that when you say "pre-paper" that you mean "wood"?

There is a lot of details on this kit. Best of luck.

excellent start for a really interesting model ;

for the rigging you can try with copper wire for electronic like this
Fils de cuivre émaillés - Votre sélection Fils de cuivre émaillés dans la boutique Fils électriques, torons, conducteurs sur conrad.fr
You can find some in any electronic hardware store

Thank you Yoav, Rich, and Michael for your kind words and your comments.

Gary:, yes, those were some 2x2 mm wood pieces I had. They were perfect.

dje: I used some silver embroidery thread I already had. Not eager to spend many Euros + shipping only for this project, which I'm intentionally building fast and simple.

I survived the rigging.
From afar it looks good.

But on closer look you can see how rough it really is.

Bleriot XI (GPM - 1:33)-bleriot_10.jpg

Those were some improvised electrical wire turnbuckles and fasteners.
Detail was lost with the CA glue I applied to secure everything :(

But at least I'm more satisfied with this than with my previous attempt 6 years ago.

Far from polished, and not at all accurate.
But I'm just building to get it done, not for a museum.

I'm sure things will start look much better when the cockpit is completed and the wings assembled.

And since I had never build something like this, I'm learning one or two things in the process. That already is good for me.

Thanks for reading!

This is a close-up of the method I used to mock the turnbuckles and fasteners.

In retrospect, it may have been a mistake on my part to apply CA glue after the thread was put in place.

Incredible amount of detail. What, no scale turnbuckles? Just kidding. It’s amazing to see the amount of work put into this kit so far.
