It's beneficial watching you work your way through the turret(s) Rob, warts and all. Thanks for posting your trials as well as your triumphs. You're doing great, keep it up!

Hi all

Just thought as I'm sitting here working on a merlin engine, I would show how I get some of the bits together.
It is the long way of doing things, but I'm no computer wiz kid for sure
I still use the old pencil and paper, I've even been known to use the odd bit of graph paper
As in first post on this, I started all this on a roll of wall lining paper while working on the houses I buy and renovate.

Avro Lancaster 1/33-avro-lanc-blank.jpg

If the drawing above shows up ok, it is to scale taken straight of my computer.
You will see as I wrote in the last post I have the basics of an engine block. Now I have been sorting the components to go on it.
I have all the spec's for this engine, the engine drawing on the right is just for my reference. To remind me where the bits go and what they should look like, I hope when built and in place.
As I did this to scale on paper I have to scan the original drawing, clean it up and then re draw it using paint.net version of the original MS paint
everything else then is trial and error, must say mostly error

Elliott I do think its good to show what goes wrong as well as what goes ok, it might just help others who can't use computers so well, just like me
And thanks to all for the comments it all helps

Anyway need to start sorting the cylinder heads now

Take care all

Rob

Hi all

I have been trying to put together some sort of version of a Merlin engine as I tried to show in the last post.
I've now put together a basic block, cylinder heads with exhaust port positons.

Avro Lancaster 1/33-20180226_233825.jpg
The two photos show how slow the progress is with these
I found it hard to get the angle correct for the cylinder heads on the block, I now think I have it

This last photo shows how far I have got tonight
I'm off tomorrow and have most of the day to myself so should get a bit further on with this and the rest of the plane. I have the outer wings and tips printed now, so will hit them as well.
As I get further on with the engines, I hope the next try will be a lot better than this attempt.

Take care all

Rob

Hi All

Not forgotten this, we have had only basic internet so could not upload or post anything at all. Just reading a page could take ages.

I have now almost finished the parts, have not wasted the down time
Also been out and about collecting info and photo's for the Vulcan and Victor I hope to do next.

Will have a string of updates over the next few days. Just need to get all the photo's in order before posting.
The three photo's are just to show what I was playing around with when I lost the internet connection. Trying to add some internal structure and testing out other bits.
Got to try to focus on one thing at a time Finding that one hard so many model ideas on the go.

Regards to all

Rob

Hi All

Just a quick update to show what I have just finished working on. The canopy and main wheel parts.
Avro Lancaster 1/33-20180407_222821.jpg
The first is the canopy ready to be laminated with its backing, then cut out tomorrow when dry. With any luck it will fit together.

Avro Lancaster 1/33-avro-lanc-main-wheels.jpg
The two above are how the wheel should look and hopefully the parts I think should make it. We shall see tomorrow, he says with a firm unsteady hopeful conviction.
By the way the two wings I have only just seen in the canopy shot are for a 1/33 scale F111 that is not far of finished. I did say at the start, my attention span for one thing is short

Have fun all
Rob

Hi All

First of two updates for tonight, the main wheels.
The parts have been laminated with scrap card (criminal offence in our house to throw out old Christmas or Birthday cards ) So these have been made from old greetings cards and rough cut before sanding
Avro Lancaster 1/33-20180408_201931.jpg
Second photo is the three main parts stuck together, sanded and tyre blackened with marker pen.
Avro Lancaster 1/33-20180408_222136.jpg
The last is all the parts shown in the previous post fitted and for me the first wheel is complete. The centre hole was made using a drill bit in a cordless drill.
Avro Lancaster 1/33-20180408_225403.jpg
With any luck I should have the canopy finished in the next few hours if I can keep my eyes open and my attention span intact, itching to crack on with the F111 and Vulcan.
More later if I can

Take care all and thanks for watching and the comments

Rob

Back again for the last tonight, 1.50 am and off to work in 5 hours

Canopy frame is finished and I'm glad to say the parts seem to have worked out. Just got to improve my cutting and building skills a lot.
Basically all this so far has been to test if all the parts fit and to work out ideas.
The next to test out is the undercarriage and fit the engines and mounts into the pods. Once this has been finished it will just be the cockpit to sort out.
I have most of it worked out and parts ready to print, just got to find the time.
Anyway here are the photo's of the canopy.

Enough of me for now, should be able to post the undercarriage in the next day or so.

Take care

Rob
