1/144 fg f-100d, 3 tfw, 90 tfs
While conversing with a member of the forum, he said he is trying to build the
aircraft that he either flew in or interacted with during his tour in Vietnam, some 50 years ago. This one's for you Dogface. Colonel Sir. With the help of John Bowden, I was able to take the FG F-100, add markings of aircraft 777, 3 TFW, 90 TFS, Bien Hoa AB, RVN, sometime in the 1966-1969 timeframe. It's been five months since I built anything, so I decided to give the sore old finger joints a workout. And it shows. There are a myriad of problems, but I wanted to sit down and just build this week. I did not build to perfection, I did not build to competition, I just wanted to build to completion! If nothing else, to try and motivate myself to sit down at the old desk on a regular basis and build. I rescaled the kit to from 1/60 to 1/144. Using photoshop, I changed the markings to represent the earlier described aircraft, found on the F-100.org site. I also slightly weathered all the panel lines, but used a very low opacity, as it is a small scale, and did not want to overdo it. I also added a small former to the intake area, to get the correct shape, as well as block it off. I did the same with the exhaust section. I replaced the flat 2D landing gear with rolled struts and retract actuators. Using a piece of thin piano wire, I also added the folded pitot tube to the front. Almost everything came out perfectly aligned, but some joints are not as clean as I would have liked. Enough rambling, here are the pics. And, just for grins, here is the original beta I did, in my first Red River silver, from about 12 years ago, with the presently done F-100

Looks great, Flyboy! I really appreciate your work and that of John Bowden in trying to identify the aircraft involved. To the best of my knowledge, the F-100s that were beating up the tree line at LZ ALPHA on Easter Sunday, 26 March 1967, were from one or more of the 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing squadrons out of Bien Hoa (90th, 416th, 510th, 531st) and they were almost certainly F-100Ds. So I think it is very likely that this aircraft from the 90th, or one very much like it was involved.
I hope to display a 1/48 version of the model at the Paper Modelers at Army Heritage Days in May. I trust that I will have show-able models of O-1D SHOTGUN 15, and OUTLAW 6 (repaint by MacSongLi/Gary based on Nobi's UH-1H) by that time as well (the Outlaws lifted us into LZ ALPHA). Since John did the recolor of SHOTGUN 15, I have yet to complete an acceptable version, but did manage to get in touch with the pilot, Ned Moore, and we have been corresponding. He bought two of the models from ECardmodels, one for him and one for his crew chief. Cảm ơn nhiều, Flyboy! Dogface Last edited by Don Boose; 02-09-2018 at 09:11 PM. |
