After Capt. Snoopy dropped by on his war bond tour the crew was all energized to get over this issue and continue production. After many trials and tribulations they have developed this procedure whichI am sure will continue to evolve.
1. Print out canopy on 20 lb paper to make it easier to cut. 2. Color the back with a pencil. 3. Using a piece of glass cut the panes from the windows. I had to make about 4 attempts before I got a set that was acceptable. a. Cut the corners first seems to help. b. Do not cut out the whole part until the panes are out. 4. Form a piece of thin mylar from one of those bubble packings you have been keeping for just this purpose all these years into the approximate shape. 5. Dip the mylar in Future and let dry. 6. Dip the mylar again and then drape the canopy pieces over the still wet Future. 7. Walk away and let it dry. To be continued...

I don't know whether all this is worth it,
but its sometimes fun to experiment with new techniques. If nothing else, you may find a solution to a future problem. [pun intended!]

Finally finished! Really enjoyed this and learned some more. Still don't have the clear canopy thing down pat yet but I think this turned out well for a first attempt. Note that the canopy (at least the sliding portion) on the real plane was natural aluminum so my coloring is not really as far off as it looks. Many thanks to Dave (airdave) for all his help and for this kit as a birthday present. The build thread he posted here really made it much easier.

The canopy colour was bare and painted at different points in War Eagle's career.
So either way is acceptable I think. I supplied a metal coloured canopy in the kit reflecting how the aircraft looked when it crash landed in Dec 1944.

Nice job, Mike! You should post a shot of this guy with your first model attempt. I think you may take the prize for continual improvement in this tricky medium.

Just to be consistent in terms of scale:
Your first model in 1/100 Thai Paperwork Hurricane II 1/100 Not even two months ago, And today your P-47, with a clear cockpit! Way to go (and you may want to revisit your Devastator, you put a lot of effort in that interior)!!! |
