I wrapped them in thin wire. The struts fit perfectly on this model. They’re still no fun to build, but I just did one or two at a time, like I did with the engine cylinders. I’d have no trouble using balsa. There are a lot of struts.

Murph posted a picture of the one I built. The info papermate had on the center float helped a ton. In total I have 12 hours build time into it. I didn't use any wire for supports on any struts and its enlarged to roughly 1/24-ish. This is the same one in the picture Murph posted earlier with the exact one the model represents in the background.

Jon,

You did a great job bringing them back to life in your pictures. I agree mostly heartily that we must remember all of the people who had the conviction and bravery to do what they knew had to be done to give us all that we have today. That was their gift to us. The least we can do is give them the gift of rememberance.

Finished

Thanks to all for your encouragement and helpful words and to Don B for more historical background (and for additions to my reading list). Butelczynski's movie tip provided a fascinating background for cutting and gluing. In an earlier post I referred to papermate's beta build post. I recommend a review of his work to anyone else contemplating the model. Other than the need to reverse and reprint the sponson there were no issues—nice to build a model where all the parts fit.

I'd love to take it to a museum (like thepaperguy) and take its picture in front of the real thing. Thanks to those of you who sent museum links.

This was indeed a journey! The result was well worth the effort... I think the lesson here is: "we hate struts" LOL.

There's a reason I don't have many biplanes or multiplanes on my site...

Imagine if I can find enough info on the Caproni Ca.60...even it's struts have struts
