Jimmy Thach's ride - F4F-3 Wildcat in 1:100 from S&P / Gerry

Next up the lil' Wildkitty from S&P and Gerry's Models. Added some formers that are not in the kit to maintain the correct rear fuse shape. I also cut off Bruno's overlap formers and turn them into butt formers. To me it makes for a better assembly.

Here at the Bethpage assembly plant Leroy Grumman is showing some Navy brass around at his latest design. One of the workers is grumbling to his mate "I sure wish Mr. Grumman would find a way to fold these damn wings so we could have more space on the floor".

(True story, I found it on the Intertnet)..

Great start on another historic aircraft. I like the addition of Leroy Grumman and visitors.

So Leroy and the QC team did an inspection and decided that the little Wildcat was a bit too humpbacked so Leroy said, ,."That's the beauty of these paper planes -- If at first you don't succeed print out another one!"

Progress was a little held up but the assembly is back on track.

With the urgency to get planes to the USN flyers the crew worked all weekend. Progress was good after some minor setbacks and Leroy seemed very pleased. He noted the improvement in the cowling construction by the design engineer Mr. Bruno. He thought long and hard over the weekend about folding wings.

Good work on the F4F and thanks for posting the news about the finding of Lexington.

The image of Wildcat F-5 with its VF-3 Felix the Cat and other markings still clearly visible is astonishing. Hard to believe that the aircraft and its paint would still be in such good condition after 76 years submerged.

Leroy and the crew are very happy with the progress on the Wildcat. They have added the very robust wing spar as well as the beloved landing gear that will take almost any punishment. No wonder the Bethpage plant was called "The Iron Works".
