Ted -
There is actually a word in Japanese for "Bent Blade Demon" 曲がった刃の悪魔 (Magatta ha no akuma - literally "twisted blade devil"). I do not know if that was a term ever used by the IJAAF, but it might well have been used by sword makers. Incidentally, in 2016, Kawasaki restored the sole remaining Ki-61-II-Kai, which was previously at the Chiran museum in an inaccurate 244th Sentai color scheme, and put it on display at the Kobe Port Terminal building in Kobe, Japan, in the authentic original natural metal finish to celebrate their 120th anniversary. https://www.khi.co.jp/120th-Hien/#news The aircraft is now at the Kagamigahara Aerospace Science Museum. Apologies for the diversion, but your Bent Blade Demon comment and your pretty Ki-61-I-KAIc (I think) in Headquarters Chutai, 244th Sentai markings sent me down a rabbit hole. Don |

landing gear....
Don, the information you provide is much better than the wiki info I might have shoved in to give a brief history. thank you.
I started doing the landing gear in between construction segments. I started with the main struts rolled tightly around a pin or needle. I use regular type writer paper for the struts, if you can't edit the file to print out the parts on soft paper you can deliberately de laminate the card stock by rolling repeatedly then carefully separate the part so it can be rolled more to scale. then those little oblong parts you see in the kit get bent in half and serve as the wheel mounting part. I scratch built the little knuckle joints found on a lot of landing gear. the tail wheel was a little u mount with the wheel in the center. shown is a neat little tool I found on ebay, it is a paper punch for---- you guessed it punching paper. but I noticed it does something neat, in tapers the punched part and makes nice tire like parts... the last pics show the gear installed |

and finished...
well it has been a bit of a journey for a 1 page kit. but I find these gems addictive and quite satisfying. they are quite the bargain for something that gives this much satisfaction, thank you Bruno!

Bruno made a few different color schemes of the ki61 and a Ki 61 kai a much improved version. it is the center green one.

Thanks for sharing so much info about your technique. Very helpful to see the landing gear and your work with a burnishing tool. You really brought the little plane to life.

Outstanding builds and an outstanding tutorial, Ted!
I learned a lot from this, although I cannot replicate your skill and years of experience. Don |
