Bachem Ba-349 "natter" by S&P 1/100

A "quick build" is the Bachem Ba349 "natter". this is one of Bruno's early Gen 1 models. It didn't have a landing gear and came in a demo color scheme that was set up after the war. I recolored it to a more probable operational scheme, but built the original along side. I left the nose cone off to show the rocket armament in the nose. The "theory" behind this craft was to launch it in a vertical rail like launcher, powered by an internal reusable ramjet, and 4 booster rockets to get it to altitude. The fuselage/wing structures were simple throwaway parts, the ramjet being the primary recoverable part, along with the pilot. the controls were locked in takeoff position the unlocked at altitude, the rockets would separate, the nose cone blown off exposing the forward firing rockets and the pilot then piloted the craft to the bombers. he would fire at one then aim the craft at another bomber and ram it. then the craft would plummet downward, spilling the pilot out, hopefully parachuting to the father land while the rest of the craft would parachute down to have its ramjet recovered.

parts etc

here are the parts of both craft layed out. the rockets were a little puzzling but looking at this thing on the web showed the nose was a little blunt domed like affair and the exhaust nozzles were simple cones. the cones on the model need to be trimmed as shown, or about 1/2 off the end. the little circles are pressed in a hard eraser to represent little domed nose pieces. the nozzles are inserted at a slight outward angle. the other pic is the work shop, with all the stuff accumulated over many years of collecting stuff, some recommended by forum members, some discovered by accident.

Its funny you picked this as your next build. I have repainted Nobi's version in two different schemes
in 1/144, and have printed them to do after the current project.

I will be interested to see how these turn out.

Well Ray, hopefully you take some assembly pics. I somehow lost the assembly stuff on the camera card. I took some post build pics, so here they are. I also hastily built up a cradle to display these little gems. I will print out a few later. the first series is the finished operational version. rockets with exhaust pointed slightly down and out. the 2nd pic is in launch position minus the launcher. the others are just walk around pics...

the 2nd series is the stock color that the kit comes in. this coloring was in a staged post war mockup of the real thing. I guess to make it more "authentic" looking they painted it so. the stock version is built up without the nose cone to show the rocket armed front end. onward to another project....

Real nice, well done. Neat... and SMALL! I really like the black one- got a sort of cartoony feel about it.

These are some great examples of a Nasty little plane, I like how your stands resemble the packing crates, Will you be making the launch rails for one of these. or do they even make the launch rails for these can't seem to find a copy.
ANYWAY Great Job!!!!!
