The kWe tail code for what looks like an A-1E would indicate an aircraft of the VNAF 518th Fighter Squadron (letter code k), if this painting by Co Vu is accurate: VNAF: 2012 I get the impression that Co Vu (VNAF) an artist who strives for accuracy, so I think it is likely that the painting is accurate.

If you can read the tail number on the original photo you took, I think we have a good chance to find out what happed to the aircraft.

Set a reminder to check the real photo. Bear in mind we are talking about a 48 year old Instamatic tho.

Life intervened today as it has a nasty way of doing so not much progress. I did receive my set of punches 2mm - 10mm. The 8mm are perfect for the wheels! No more frustration cutting out round thangs!

Also added a special picture for our new friend Rata from down undah. This is the way he sees aerioplanes!!

When putting on the tail, squeeze/shape the back top of the fuselage and spread the bottom of the tail so the markings line up and it looks like a Skyraider. Make sense?

Good luck,
Brent

Still fighting to keep the mad dogs of life at bay but made a little more headway. Mucho Gracias to Brent for the tip on the vertical fin. I squeezed a custom wooden former (toothpick) in to set the width jist raht so that the little hornet's head would line up. Also included the required upside down shot for our friend Mr. Rata.

Wow!

Looks great. Very smooth fuselage joins, and the overall appearance of the fuselage looks like a Skyraider.

Nice Spad.

There is also what appears to be a name or slogan just below the canopy which might assist. The tail number appears to be XAJ K113 or 8.
