If ever anyone has questions about any particular Navy aircraft, visit Tommy Thomason's outstanding site, Tailhook Topics. Here's a section that addresses the cowl flaps y'all were discussing.

I learn something new every day. Glad you mentioned the cowl flaps/shutters Michael.
Great site, Gene! And previously unknown to me. Don |

Of course an AD is not an AD unless it is full o' blowy up stuff. Many thanks to Gene for the link to the tailhook site. OK so he was a day late and a dollar short --- it's the thought that counts right? Lots of distracting stuff still brewin' here at chez Michael but I hope to get her load out done in the next day or so.

Hi All,
And hi, MichaelS. That's a handsome Spad you have there. Kudos to both the builder and designer. Your new punches look like a useful addition to you workbench, too. Question. In yesterday's post from Don Boose, the red triangle under the Spad's cockpit reads, "Extraction Seat" rather than, "Ejection Seat." What's the difference? Time to load those rocket launchers. Superb work on the undercarriage.
To my eye, this is your best 1/100 model to date. Each one gets better. Don |

Beautiful work young fella. The tail graphics lined up perfectly, dihedral correct and everything square- a treat from every angle.
I concur with Don- this could be your best to date.

The difference in an extraction seat and ejection seat...with the extraction seat,
the pilot is pulled out of the aircraft by the rocket motor, with the seat staying in the aircraft. With the ejection seat, the pilot and seat are pushed out of the aircraft by the rocket motor. The extraction seat was also known as the "Yankee seat".
