Murph's Early PBY in 1/87

This is one of my all time favorite planes, I have always thought is was a very graceful design and a thing of beauty in flight.

I shrank down Murph's PBY to 1/87 and am amazed at how big that plane was. I had to check the figures to make the sure the scale was correct, the dern thing has the same wing span of a B17 (within a foot). It is a little longer and the fuselage is wider.

Anyhoo, the model really goes together nicely, since I shrank it I made joining strips to forgo most of the tabs, I also threw in a couple of formers in the fuselage and laminated some card stock in the wings and tail surfaces. The first former I put in caused a bump in the bottom of the hull, so I put a little patch over it (ala Deckape) so that is why the is an extra square piece on the bottom. I did have a little trouble with the first hull step, the piece that fits there seems a little to high, I had to cut it down after assembled, also fitting those two hull sections together is a real head scratcher. I did make a slight change on the graphics on this one, the original model has wide orange and dark grey lines around the top and bottom of the ailerons (I think an attempt to add depth), I eliminated those.

I got a new printer and the colors don't seem to be adjusted properly, so the wings came out a little orange.

Mike

A work of art. This has been in my hard drive for a long time. Too long.

Congrats on a splendid job. And thanks to Aaron for his designs.

Great job. I love 1/87. Not too big, not too small.

Great job Mike. Looks good on the tarmac with it's pre-war colour scheme.
