Talking Curtiss BFC-2 Hawk in 1:100 from der Kampfflieger

Oh what I wouldn't have given to be a US Navy Aviator in the 30's! Flying off the deck of the "Sara" or the "Lady Lex". Can you just imagine flying in a formation with all those colors!

In reality there probably wasn't all that much flying. It was the depression and the war clouds were just beginning to gather. Those old crates were not very reliable. They only served for 2 or 3 years and then they were retired. Other countries used them quite extensively. The origins of the Stuka and dive bombing can be traced back directly to a Curtiss Hawk that Ernst Udet brought back to Germany. In the pack that I bought from ecards there is the Hawk that Udet had. I really thought hard about doing that one.

I am trying gloss photo paper for this one to really highlight all these colors. It looks very fragile so I am taking it slow. This appears to be another great design by Roman Vasilyev. It will require some pre planning because he hasn't provided much in the way of joiners but I enjoy the challenge.

I printed one page in 1:48 by mistake. What a huge difference in size!! If I had started with this size I am sure I would be talking to a divorce lawyer right about now!

Looking forward to your build. I have not had good luck with photo paper myself.

Without a doubt one of my all-time favorite between-the-wars biplanes. Radial engine, big wheel spats and that Curtiss wing planform. Sheer poetry. When it evolved into the retract BF2C, it sorta lost something (IMHO).

Give it your all young fella- I know this will be another good'un.

You must really like these interwar USN planes .

Udet's Hawk is restored and displayed at the Polish Aviation Museum in Cracow. I visited this museum in 2010 and as I recall, Curtiss was under restoration. Now it's fully restored. Maybe I'll visit PAM again this summer.

Abort Will Robinson, Abort!!

Gloss printer paper is not going to work. When I try and bend it just flakes the ink off in chunks. I left it about 20 hours so I feel that the ink was dry.

Printing out another one on 32 lb paper.

Oh the joys of paper modeling!!

Cost: Prolly Fiddy Cents for paper and ink.

Stay Tuned!

Exclamation

Well after a slight hiccup we are moving forward again. Very nicely designed kit. Making it smaller of course adds some complication but I have overcome those. Once again I stuffed her with tissue to add strength, especially while building. The cockpit detail shows up surprisingly well.

Quite a huge tool for such a little aerioplane, huh? ;-)

Looking forward to this build! Tissue stuffing ... wish I'd thought of that.

Glad your tech team overcame the problem.

You know, you don't HAVE TO do full cockpit detail.

...mainly 'cos it makes other 1/100 builders like me look like lazy schlubs.
