Kacper's Cat- PacificWind PBY Recolour 1/150

Started on PacificWind's recent repaint of the S&P Consolidated PBY-5 Catalina that is downloadable free from this very site.

Got the wing done today- bit tricky getting it all straight and true, but took my time and gluing a little at a time. I've decided to leave the engines off until wing is mounted on fuselage. That way if there's any alignment issues I can deal with them before gluing.

Nice to see my recolor being under construction in Australia.

Absolutely clean and precise work on the wing(or wings?).

I couldn't decide that either....

Onto the fuselage/hull. This is my first flying boat and finding a whole bunch of new challenges so now can completely relate to MichaelS and his current Boeing 314 build! Deciding what to do first is problematic- but ONE thing I do know- having a complete mental picture of this aeroplane and it's tricky shapes and lines before gluing anything is vital.

Came to the decision that the upper/lower join line (where the fuselage stops being an aeroplane and becomes a boat) is probably the most important to get right, so I'll do the entire top half first then (hopefully) it will all match the lower- at least at this point that's the theory. Time will tell!

The Catalina is indeed a beautiful plane. Your work on the wing(s) is super Garry and I know the rest will be as well. Looking forward to more.

Progressing- slowly. Had a re-think on the fuse construction. I think trying to join the entire thing as an upper/lower assembly was gonna end badly. Decided that joining complete front and rear halves would be better- that way I can poke around inside with paintbrush handle or toothpick in either half to get better upper/lower alignment.

Minor design fault found- the flat panel (I think it is a crew hatch on the full size) on the nose slopes back at too sharp an angle. Setting it at a more accurate angle results in two little triangular gaps which I filled with PVA to be painted later.

BTW, before assembly, I also scored along the centre-line of the whole underside giving a shallow vee shape which looks pretty right.

I think at this point it's fair to state this is NOT a beginners model. No fault with the model, it's simply the tricky shapes and lines of the PBY. Baby steps!!

Looks good, and your narrative and images are very instructive.

Garry looks good. The gaps left by what I see in the photos I think it's as if the bow lacks more curvature inwards, I do not know if the photo is deceiving, but I see that. I think with more curvature like to the prow of a boat the lateral ones would be closed. These noses are not easy at all.Igual looks very well
