John Dell's Pearl Harbor B17C in 1/87

This John's B17C built at 1/87, I know its bigger than 1/100 but I like HO scale.

Anyhoo, everything on the this kit fit perfectly, as expected from one of John's models. The only problem I encountered was the front of the wing fairing in the bottom of the plane. I built this out of 67lb. card stock and it just didn't want to curve properly so I managed to get some wrinkles, of course I may have just been impatient .

I used John's improved wheels and engines. The wheels turned out well, but the engines were just too small the see any detail after they went into the cowling behind the propellers. I didn't put on any antennas or gun barrels 'cause I figured I would just knock them off when dusting the plane, all other details I did use, like the scoops, bumps and vents on the nacelles and wings.

Fabulous! Right out of the 1942 movie "Air Force". I want to build one of these sooo bad. BUT I really want to do the updated Model 299 that he says he is working on.

Well done. I built a 1/48 version, but am dissatisfied with my craftsmanship and hope to build another before the end of the year. Your excellent 1/100 version is an inspiration.

Thanks guys, it was a fun build. I'm not crazy enough to try this at 1/100, that cowl was hard enough to form at 1/87.

Very nice job building at that scale. I want to try and build the Memphis Belle at that scale and do a diorama of her at one of the war bond tour stops. None of the B-17s arriving over Pearl Harbor during the attack had their guns mounted. So you were right not to worry about them. Once again, very nice work!

Sorry for the erroneous reference to 1/100, Mike. My brain was fogged by all the great 1/100 builds that have been appearing in the Forum.

Your 1/87 build is super.
