it's like the story of the British journalist who didn't speak Italian who got to ride with an Italian race driver who did not speak English. When the journalist started to get scared, he screamed to only Italian word he knew "Basta", meaning enough. The driver mistakenly thought the journalist asked to go "faster".

Don't worry too much, Mike. You won't be poked with the soft cushions or be forced to sit in the comfy chair.

If you're English, you should understand it completely.
Comes from the old nautical saying "blow me down".
Means being astounded or surprised by something.
"Well blow me down..."

But even at 70, my Father used the phrase all the time...
and this is in Canada and the US, where the phrase isn't nearly as common.

"blow me, if I couldn't find a parking space!"...
"blow me, isn't that nice!"
"blow me, I need to find a bathroom."

and you could spot the heads turning every where he went.

I'd suggest moving this thread to the Off-Topic area.
How the heck did you end up in the Aviation Model build section?! lol
when i first moved to nz being a smoker could not smoke in pubs inside,
so i innocently stood up and said ""will be back in moment ,.just going outside for a fag"" well if looks could kill i was dead at that moment

No, it wasn't .... but rather childish since "dude" is most often used by kids amongst themselves. Even moreso using "dood" trying to be even cuter. So if Mike is a kid, I understand completely.

I know plenty of Adults that use "dude" quite regularly.
I don't find it to be a childish word at all.
Its silly at times, but not something only a child might use.

In England, a Dude used to refer to stylish, well dressed, trendy, hip persons.
As in David Bowie's "All the Young Dudes"

Is this what this is all about?...dood? or am I missing something?
Are you aware thats the personal form of "dude".
You call a guy on the street "dude".
You call your friend "dood".
Its all about the stretching out of the sound.

Dood in Dutch means dead

as in Hij is dood
He is dead
so to remove any confusion from our Dutch speaking members, i asked if Mike would consider using Dude, or if he wants to keep the same look go with the hacker or leet speak spelling of dude = d00d

that is all

Rick

I'm not arguing just to be an ass or disagreeable, honestly....but...

Dood is an acceptable English word, both modern and slang and should be on this forum.

I've searched a few online dictionaries, and "dood" in Dutch can mean:
dead, dying, expiring, exhausted; listless, fatigued and more.

And since this is an English speaking forum...

Unless you are speaking directly to one who regularly speaks the Dutch language
and are deliberately using the word you know will be taken as some form of insult,
I don't see why there is any discussion over this?

I'm sure we could quote a thousand English words used on this forum
that have different meanings or references in other languages.

Just my opinion.
