Gary Pilsworth's Airspeed AS.31
Here is another of Sir Pilsworth's unique models, the Airspeed AS.31. I'm not sure of why you want the pilot of a fighter plane in the tail. Perhaps to better simulate a roller coaster ride? Longer sight line for the aiming system? German pilots would feel sorry for the poor chap and not shoot at him? Because we are British, so don't need to follow standard convention? Anyway, it produces a very unique design.
The model is a bit complex, especially around the engine/wing structure. The wing is one piece tip to tip, and the engine needs to be squeezed into the structure while the wing is being built. Credit to Sir Pilsworth for getting this complicated joint designed properly. I started out by assembling the left wing half before attaching the engine but this proved to be the wrong technique. I had to cut the left wing open again and started assembling the bottom of the wing, then carefully bending the wing over the upper engine parts. I added a bit of cardboard to the assembled cockpit pieces to help position the elevators properly. I had to lengthen the tail wheel strut to get it to stick out in the correct location. The landing gear struts are long and thin, so not the easiest to form. I printed this of a laser printer so had a lot of flaking of the color/colour from the struts. |

Wow, what a strange thing, that was flying? I never saw this. The great job, very neat, great construction of a model out of the ordinary. Very well done

Beautiful model. VERY unusual airplane.
Looks like it came off the cover of a 1930s Flying Aces magazine. Don |

I saw this design in my European experimental aircraft book and thought it was designed by idiots .
Not only is the pilot going to be rattled by all the movements, but the structure would fail in flight at anything over 3 g. Reminds me of the planes in the computer game Crimson sky Those magnificent men in their flying machines ......... Isaac

That is a crazy looking aircraft. Bet the pilot would hope those booms are strong and attached real good.

But at least the engine exhaust blows straight back in the pilot's line of sight...
Pretty, but don't count on me ever wanting to fly in one 'VERY unusual' may be an understatement. But you did it proud

Beautiful job, that is one strange looking airplane. I tried to build this model once and failed, congratulations.

Great build
Your right a tricky one to do, I had to build it to make sure it could be done

Great job Knife on this oddball aircraft.
If the pilot had to bail out at least there's no danger of hitting anything.
