There was a version of the L2D that had a dorsal turret: the L2D4 and L2D4-1 had a dorsal turret at the location of the astrodome that housed a 13mm machine gun, but as far as I know, these versions never went into production.

Kacper has asked me how the L2D was used operationally, and if they were ever used for dropping parachutists, but I haven't had a chance to dig into the question yet. As far as I know, they were used exclusively by the Japanese Navy as their standard personnel and cargo transports, and saw limited use in the maritime surveillance role. It seems likely that they were used as paratroop transports by the Special Naval Landing Force airborne units, but I don't have any specific information yet on their use in airborne combat operations. As far as I know, the only SNLF airborne operations were early in the war in the Dutch East Indies (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japane...f_World_War_II).

My main source of information is R.J. Francillon, Japanese Aircraft of the Pacific War, New York, Funk & Wagnalls, 1970, pp. 499-502.

The Wiki article looks to be accurate: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Showa/Nakajima_L2D

This site has some images, but not much info: japl2d - Dan Rather covered Japan News Stories

I hope to have more later, but will be glad if anyone with more knowledge than I will weigh in.

Don
