Talking 1/400 PBY Catalina

Another of the unsung heroes of the Pearl Harbor was a PBY that found the Japanese mini subs on the morning of Dec 7th. The suspicious sub was first reported by a barge crew and the PBY flew to investigate. To have seen something as small as this in the pre-dawn light must have been really a fluke of luck. The PBY reported its sighting to the USS Ward and the rest is little known history.

This is the 1/400 PBY Catalina accompanying the JSC USS Ward. It is a pretty straightforward build so far.

Looks good so far. Way to small for my eyes and fingers to cope with, but it looks like you are turning it into a genuine Catalina.

Very nice plane in my favorite scale!
JSC has a number of land and sea planes in this scale.

ps: Use your glasses.

What's this 1/400 caper? This had better be a temporary diversion or visit by 'the boys' will be in order.

Any other models come with the USS Ward?

Yes. The kit includes the I-16 ocean sub and also the mini sub. They also sent a large cargo ship that doesn't appeal to me at all.

My eyes hurt just looking at this model. I wish I could still see well enough to build something this small.
Looks great so far.

Finished this up and added her to the USS Ward display. This is fairly historically accurate as the PBY spotted the Japanese mini sub after it was reported by a barge crew. Then the PBY and the Ward worked together to locate it.

I would have to say that 1/400 for an aerioplane is about as far as I ever want to go again....

Good work! It is an excellent representation of 14-P-1 of Patrol Squadron 14 (VP-14), and here is the Patrol Wing Two summary of operations on 7 December 1941, including the report that at "0700 14-P-1 sank enemy submarine one mile off Pearl Harbor entrance." https://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN.../PatWing2.html

But you do it so well! Is the large mini-sub far behind?
