The first sentence of the previous post should have started as :

Exclamation Main gear struts

The struts are wood dowels with metal pins on either end

Here is the pivot ( also wood dowel with pin thru the side into the wing spar )

Cool Wheels shaping

Recall that the resin wheels I am using are from an F-4 Phantom. The shape of those tires are rather square and need rounding.

I drilled out the center to accept a mounting screw
Su-9 first generation-Orel 1/33 scale-img_7437.jpg

mount it on my mini lathe
Su-9 first generation-Orel 1/33 scale-img_7438.jpg

and sand the wheel to rounded shape
Su-9 first generation-Orel 1/33 scale-img_7439.jpg

here is a before and after sanding

Su-9 first generation-Orel 1/33 scale-img_7441.jpg

Now paint the wheels. I use Tamiya paints

Ready to go

Exclamation Main wheels on

At this point, I glued a wooden short dowel back into the center hole, glued the axles using super glue and then onto the axles.
Su-9 first generation-Orel 1/33 scale-img_7451.jpgSu-9 first generation-Orel 1/33 scale-img_7452.jpgSu-9 first generation-Orel 1/33 scale-img_7453.jpgSu-9 first generation-Orel 1/33 scale-img_7454.jpgSu-9 first generation-Orel 1/33 scale-img_7455.jpg

Notice that at this point there is no detailing to the struts. I will add some on later on after the model is on its landing gear.

Exclamation Nose gear

The nose gear is similar in construction to the main. However, there is an extra axle to support the twin wheels.

The 'feet and legs' look great. That lathe is a nice machine.

Keep up the great work!

Thumbs up Guns

thank you guys for following this build.

The last detail for now are the guns. They are made of painted wood dowels.
Su-9 first generation-Orel 1/33 scale-img_7484.jpg

At this point the work on this model is done. There is still the small bomb, rack and antenna wires, but for now, they are omitted since I am bringing it to the US Air Force Museum this Saturday as part of my paper plane display and talk about early jet development.
