Su-9 first generation-Orel 1/33 scale
After a long break from paper models in which I spent time volunteering at the US Air Force Museum and also building 4 plastic models, I am back!
My clean desk I decided to finally build the Orel kit of the first generation version of the Suchoi Su-9. This is a complicated kit from the Ukraine written in Russian. It does have some nice views and sketches to assist in the construction. However, I had a hard time using the construction method shown in the instruction and had to test build parts to modify it. Some of you may recall that I was asking for information as to how others built it, but all pointed to suspicious web sites which I did not dare enter. Orel Su-9 Anyone built it This is the only safe pictures I saw As a quick description, this Su-9 first generation is a derivative of the German WW2 Me-262 jet fighter. The Russians used the captured data and even used the Jumo 004 jet engines to test the aircraft. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukhoi_Su-9_(1946) My reason for building it is that I already built the Me 262 and the Japanese Kikka and this one will round out that collection. More soon Isaac

An interesting subject No doubt it will make a good trio with the Me-262 and the Kikka.

The kit
The kit is printed in good quality and all the exterior parts are in silver. Special care is needed in handling it, but it is not as sensitive as some of the other silver kits I built. Some parts are printed on different pages and you have to hunt for them.
The construction method selected by the designer is a frame and then skin variety common to some of the newer Polish kits. There are no joining strips at all. The wings also are fully framed prior to skinning. Of interest is the wing upper and lower surfaces which are separate and joined at the leading and trailing edge on top of the frame. I think this is an overdone "jigsaw puzzle" that is prone to so many errors, that it took me the courage of many years to start building this model. At the end, I have decided on a hybrid method in which some framing is used, but joining strips are used to mate the parts. A bit more on that next time. Pics of the kit and instruction here: Isaac

Isaac,
No joiner strips? Based on your photos, it doesn't even look like the formers are butt joined either. Good luck! Gary

I would love to see how the intended assembly of this kit really would work. Way too many frames. Isaac

Trial construction
I decided to scan and print out the frames and the skins so I can experiment first.
Here are the parts of the fuselage frames and assembled ( but not with all the pieces ) and the fuselage test printed skins. The intent is that they would be glued onto the frames. I don't see how that is possible! There is no material over the frames and I am sure there will be gaps as well as warped fuselage. hmmm..... Isaac

Yikes, this will be interesting to see how the skins actually go on the frames.
