Nice job on the photos. Very nice job on the exhaust pipes. I think you are "fibbing" about the LG indicators!!!

Very nice Yaks. I might get one just because my SB-2 can use a company.
Those must be very early wartime Yaks since they have upper wing red stars . |

Yak 5
actually 40 ish. some of the units in the field kept their stars but by 41-42 they began to comply also.
Next up is the yak-5. this was the soviets experimental high altitude fighter. it was being developed the same time that yak 1 late model B was. The 1b evolved to the yak-3 series which was becoming successful and a match for the me-109f series. The Yak 5 had a larger wingspan, powered forward slats, and a super tuned engine that still crapped out after some negative g maneuvers. as the Yak 3 was very successful and the 5 was less than stellar the soviets dropped the project. The model needed some trimming to the wings and a few details added. the tailwheel was retractable so doors had to be added and the profile changed. the main gear had completely covered wheel wells. as this was a prototype and little was on the net to determine coloring I chose a monotone green complete with red stars. the under coolers were changed and the underbelly cooler was the one used in the later yak 9 series. |

Gotta admit you got me with this one CMDRTED! I've never heard of the -5 till now.
Again, congrats on a splendid build.

the Russians were not very keen on admitting less than success. they also had a way of designating marks and mods that confuses many non soviet modelers.

And even jailing top aircraft designers! Tupolev designed the excellent Tu-2 while a 'guest of the state'.

Tupolev wasn't the only one. One of the reasons for horrible quality of Soviet planes was use of forced labor from gulag system. Very few Russians today know the extent of gulag slave labor in USSR in 1917-1955 period.
I didn't know about Yak-5 either. Very broad wings on it. Thank you for making those pictures. Cool builds all of them |
