Of course in hindsight what Messrs Stipa and Caproni didn't know was that a standard aircraft prop in a duct actually LOSES a level of efficiency. Plus the duct itself takes up most of the fuselage which sees the crew stuck up on top top like that. Fascinating aspect of aviation history though. Thanks for posting MS!

Yep! The dayem thing looks crazy enough to think that it had been designed in Ost-Trail-Yeehaw!

Checked out the FG listing for the flying barrel which led me to this search result:

Some crazy looking aircraft.

According to all the pictures I can find I actually built it correctly. The propeller is in front of the barrel, not inside.

Mike, looks like you could be correct. Check out this side view:
https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:S...ni_profilo.jpg
It clearly shows the propeller to be outside the barrel.

They were on to something regarding a ducted fan, but should have built experimental models before building the entire plane.

Having the propeller just outside the duct simplified the design at the expense of efficiency .

But that was the time of experimentation on the fly

Those magnificent men in their flying machines.....
