Thumbs up Hanriot HD-1 USS Texas - take 2

Paper Hanriot HD-1 USS Texas - take 2

Pilot error a few weeks back resulted in my first attempt at this little gem being water damaged and struck off the inventory. Never one to leave a job half done I have started its replacement.

This is the originally 1/48th version from Der Kampfflieger hit with my incredible shrinking ray to 1/100.

I am glad that you are doing a second build of BuNo A5625. Your first one looked terrific before its water landing when the flotation bags failed to deploy.

Caption for Image 1: "Hanriot HD-1 from the Texas (BB-35) on the beach. These markings appeared at a Fleet Review in November 1919 at Seattle WA in honor of a visit by President Wilson campaigning for approval of the League of Nations Treaty." NavSource Battleship Photo Index BB-35 USS TEXAS

Image 2: BuNo A5625 before the "Texas" markings were applied.

The weather forecast is ''calm with possible light breeze'' MS. Should be ok but strap her down anyway!

Don,

From previous research, I recall that the USN bought ten HD.2 seaplanes from the French, and subsequently modified them to land configuration in Philadelphia. So the TEXAS aircraft is an HD.2, correct?

Gene K

EDIT: One of several references: Windsock Datafile 92, Hanriot HD.1 and HD.2, Page 14: "Soon after the war, the US Navy bought ten Hanriot HD.2 seaplanes and converted all but one to landplanes at the Naval Aircraft Factory in Philadelphia."

Gene - Correct. It's an HD-2 assembled to resemble an HD-1 at the Naval Aircraft Factory in Philadelphia.

I cover this in my write up for Garry's build of Bruno's version of the Hanriot: http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/651204-post203.html I used the Windsock pub as one of my references.

It's one of a series of little essays that I have written to accompany Garry's models in his interwar USN-USMC thread: http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/651204-post203.html

Incidentally, Gene, with your knowledge of naval aviation history and access to the staff and resources of the museum at Pensacola, I hope you will weigh in with additional info or corrections to these little essays.

Don

Getting ready for adding the top wing. This is really a nice kit and a very pretty airplane.
