Very good work. There is something eye catching about floatplane, isn't it?

Roscoe Turner was flamboyant, charming and a great showman. He was also a damn fine racing pilot with a deep understanding of aircraft design. His air racing exploits are well documented. In 1930 he persuaded the Gilmore Oil Co. (later absorbed into Mobil) to purchase Lockheed Air Express NR-3057 from the General Tire & Rubber Co. that he re-engined and re-painted to be a promotional vehicle for Gilmore Red Lion products. He also purchased a lion cub which he named Gilmore and raised it at his Beverly Hills home. Roscoe conditioned Gilmore to flying in the Air Express and even designed a special parachute for him and flew with him until about 1935 when Gilmore grew too heavy and unmanageable (lions do that) in the aircraft. Gilmore was returned to his breeder and died in 1952. His stuffed body was eventually donated to the Smithsonian.
On May 27, 1930 Turner flew NR-3057 from Roosevelt Field NY to Grand Central Airport Glendale LA 18:42:30 hours, breaking the east-west transcontinental speed record.
This plane just oozes Golden Age charm. I first became aware of it in Charles A Mendenhall's 'The Air Racer' book and have always since wanted a model of it.
This repaint is a combination of Bruno's Lockheed Sirius and Lockheed Vega models. I hope you like it and it will be available for sale via Ecards when it returns.

Great work, Garry!

I think the Lockheed aircraft of the 1930s were really beautiful. Your Gilmore Red Lion Air Express looks especially good to my eye.
