Excellent model and superbe work on recolor.I had to look it up since I've never heard of this plane.Lockheed did some great designs way back then.I still have FG Vega on "to do" list but it's been there so long I don't think I'll make it (thanks to Bruno and Aaron lol).

FG also have a Lockheed Explorer which I've got and will eventually do in 1/100. I'm investigating the viability of doing a repaint of Bruno's Vega as Wiley Post's Winnie May. Lot of script on the fuselage to replicate so may not happen.

Forum member Butelczynski expressed his desire to see a model of the photo recon version of the Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat- the F4F-3P. I'd only just finished the pre-war version in another thread and as I was still in 'Wildcat Mode', I did this one of Marine Squadron VMO-251. The test build has shown some issues- the fuselage codes need to slope down towards the rear a bit; prop hub slightly shortened and the fuselage fairing added between the landing gear legs. All these have been rectified in the final version. I've done an 'in flight' build here, but the model (when released via Ecards) will come with landing gear. Really enjoying adding the crew figures to my models- another step closer to being as good as the plastics!

Garry's model is of a Grumman F4F-3P Wildcat photo-reconnaissance fighter of Marine Observation Squadron 251 based at Espiritu Santo in the fall of 1942.

A number (at least ten) F4F-3s were converted to armed photo-reconnaissance aircraft in Navy repair depots and designated F4F-3P (photo). Aerial cameras were installed in the lower starboard fuselage with a cable to the cockpit to operate a trap door that covered the camera opening. Grumman also developed a very long range (3,000 miles, 24-hour endurance) photo-recon version of the F4F, the F4F-7, some of which served during the Guadalcanal Campaign alongside F4F-3Ps in Marine Observation Squadron 251 (VMO-251).

VMO-251 with its octopus insignia flew out of Espiritu Santo, in the New Hebrides Islands during the Guadalcanal Campaign. Espiritu Santo was where the headquarters for the Guadalcanal operation (Operation WATCHTOWER) was located.

I have been unable to determine the Bureau of Aeronautics Number (BuNo) for 251-MO-1 (Garry's model), but the web site for Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 251 (VMA-251 - the descendent of VMO-251) has historical information and, in the galleries, images of F4F-3Ps: VMFA-251 | History | Mike Crowder

See also Marine Corps Aviation Reconnaissance Association, Marine Observation Squadron VMO-251) History, available at http://www.mcara.us/VMO-251.html

Matthew Laird Acred offers some sharp images of VMO-251 personnel and aircraft at his Asisbiz website, from which these images are taken with his permission: https://www.asisbiz.com/il2/Wildcat/...o-1942-02.html

If anyone can identify the BuNo of 251-MO-1, I would be grateful.

My write up of Garry's original revision of Bruno's model is at
