Third one is a simpler scheme, but a departure from Japanese markings: Manchurian Air Force.

Garry –

Yes. The 246 Hikō Sentai (Flying Combat Regiment), 2nd Chutai (blue fuselage bands), bird was on homeland air defense duties June 1942-June 1943 at Kakogawa air field in southwestern Honshu on the coast of the Inland Sea. Below is an image of an almost-identical aircraft with red fuselage stripes that Richard Bueschel identifies as a 3rd Chutai aircraft flown by Corporal Koyama (given name unknown). Richard M. Bueschel, Nakajima Ki.27A-B, Manshu Ki.79A-B in Japanese Army Air Force-Manchuoukuo-IPSF-RACAF-PLAAF & CAF Service, New York: Arco 170, page 3.

I can’t identify the unit of the Manchukuoan bird, but the fuselage inscription reads Gokoku Antō Yo-gō, literally, Defense of the Fatherland Antō Number Four. It was the fourth Ki-27 presented to the Manchukuoan Air Force by the people of Antung.

Below is a photograph of it from page 155 of George Eleftherious and Kiri Domoto-Eleftherious, The Eagle of Manchukuo, 1932-1945: An Illustrated History of the Civilian and Military Aviation, Tokyō: Arawasi Press, 2011. I just happened to have this book on my shelf.

Cheers,

Don

Thanks for that info Don. Having it means I can include it on the model PDF before submitting to Ecards. That photo of the Manchurian Ki-27 shows I need to clean up the fuselage inscription on my repaint!

Yes. The Kanji characters are somewhat stylized.

I have a clearer image of the 246 Hikō Sentai Ki-27, a drawing, and descriptive material in Famous Airplanes No. 29, but it will take me a while to do the translation and I have a number of other demands just now (including the F2A-2 and other trivial things involving finances and house repairs), so it might be a while before I get the gist of it.

No problem Don; whenever you get around to it. Thanks again for the info you've supplied so far.

This 77th Sentai 'Nate' will be the fourth recolour. What's not apparent here is the upper wing and tailplane surfaces have camouflage colours.

Thanks Pericles. I'm trying for some variety. Got another Chinese one plus a full camo version planned too.

Don

Let me know if you want them translated. My wife is a professional Mandarin translator (both traditional and simplified). She can translate Japanese as well.

Thanks,
Gary

I asked my wife. Here's what she said.

It is traditional Mandarin characters (Japanese are the same characters for the time period).

1st 2 characters mean Home Defense

2nd 2 characters literal translation "Stability for the East". Meaning Peace for Asia

last 2 characters mean "number 4"

So you have "Home Defense Peace for Asia Number 4"

Interesting to note from what my wife can see the aircraft behind starts with "Home Defense", but the next two characters are different (my wife couldn't see enough of the characters to determine what it says).

Hope this helps.
Gary
