Ryan STM-S2 in Dutch MLD Service
Garry -
The recent discussion in Kacper's thread about the mythical 120 Squadron ML-KNIL Douglas TBD-1 has gotten me interested in Dutch air operations in defense of the NEI 1941-42. I am developing a list of resources on that topic and took delivery today of Tom Womack, The Dutch Naval Air Force against Japan; The Defense of the Netherlands East Indies, 1941–1941 (Jefferson, NC: McFarland & Company, 2006). I found this image on page 15, in case you are looking for additional Ryan ST repaint projects. "A total of 108 [Ryan STM-2 and STM-S2] aircraft eventually reached ML and MLD forces throughout 1941 . . . a number of Ryan floatplanes were sent to Borneo following the outbreak of war to fly reconnaissance missions and patrol the island's various harbors . . . 34 [Ryans] survived to be evacuated to Australia in March 1942, where they were bought by the Australian government and transferred to the RAAF." Ibid. This will provide additional inspiration: https://kw.jonkerweb.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=584:r yan-stm-2-en-stm-2s-uk&catid=95&lang=en&showall=1&limitstart=&Itemid=5 57 Ties in with the airplanes on floats discussion you and Michael and I had recently via email (TBD-1A, Vought SB2U-3, etc.). And, nothing to do with Ryans, but apropos the season, I posted the following anecdote about VF-6's 1941 Christmas card in Kacper's Grumman TBF-1 8-T-1 thread, where it disappeared without trace (or, apparently, a read). I like the story, so am posting the link here: http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/658094-post12.html Don |

I did see and read that post DB. I am a long time Wild Kitty fan. One day many years ago a flight I was on to somewhere in Ohio was diverted to O'Hare. Going through the terminal to my next flight I came around the corner and there was Butch's commemorative F4F-3! What an astounding shock. What a beautifully purposeful machine. What an important part of our history.
Can't get enough of Leroy Grumman's birds.

Ryan 'RAF Fighter' from Dive Bomber Film.
Guilty as charged Don! Pinched the cowling from the S&P Henschel Hs.123 and tried to follow the camo pattern as accurately as possible from the screenshots- got it mostly right I reckon.
