Dear Friends:
I grew up in Texas and my parents had friends that lived on lake Worth, the end of Carswell Air force base runway was right up against the lake on a 75 foot bluff. The friends had kids my age and they had a 8 foot Sailing pram. This was in the late 1950's. We were out in the middle of the Lake off the end of the runway when one of the flyboy's came way to low to land. Blew us over, made the air stink, we dropped the sail righted the boat bailed it out, went on sailing. Found out later that My father and his friend both who worked for bell helicopter later called the base and razzed them they suggested that the plane have painted on it a "Kill Marking" of a small sailboat. I am glad that the pilot was able to pull up if it had hit the bluff it would have been messy.

Miles,

I grew up just N of there, Samsom park. About 1976 we moved to a farm.
I was also part of the 301st TFS at Carswell, '83-'86, working F-4d.

I know the area well!

When I lived in the Metroplex, sometimes I'd take my young son out by that runway, as close as civilians could get, anyway. It was shared with General Dynamics and we'd watch pilots take F-16s fresh off the assembly line perform Maximum-Performance Takeoffs. They were usually several thousand feet in the air before they reached the edge of the lake.

Then we'd go to Arlington and sit at the edge of NAS Dallas and watch the F-14s....

Apparently the authorities at St.Maarten aren't all that worried how close you get....

Closing in on finishing my 1/300 paper B-58 Hustler. Went on Google to find some good base art. Amazing what comes up when you Google "Hustler emblem" ;-)
