Wonderful stuff. Looks almost like one could climb right in and fly her away.

Exclamation Canopy

The canopy for this aircraft is a nice round bubble. I did not feel like making my own vacuformed version so I had an extra canopy I purchased from GPM that looked close enough to do the job. That canopy is for a Heinkel He-162 Salamander. The forward portion is a perfect match, but the aft is just OK. So I used it.

Here is the canopy and the frames

and glued on.

For some reason, the glue was just not cooperating with me here and the frames came off and I had to glue it again making a bit of a mess that I will clean later ( I hope ).

Also, the printed kit quality is just average. I found that if I tried to clean areas that had glue on, that the ink on the paper just rubbed off. Maybe scanning it and printing on a good quality paper would have been better.

Nice kit bashing work, Isaac. The canopy looks great.

Exclamation Wheels

The wheels are made using card stock ( I use a circular cutter to cut the disks )
Yakovlev Yak-1000 YG-model-img_8513.jpg

They are then glued and laminated to thickness needed
Yakovlev Yak-1000 YG-model-img_8514.jpg

When dry, I then mounted it on my mini lathe and sanded it to shape.

Here they are.
Yakovlev Yak-1000 YG-model-img_8519.jpg

the hubs cut and ready ( they will be glued after the wheels are painted ).

and the small outrigger wheels. I used a hole punch for that process.

Note on wheels:
The original Yak-1000 was built with a single wheel in the forward bay and a single wheel in the rear bay. However, this kit shows a double wheel arrangement in the rear. This in not correct! However, for the sake of ground stability, I kept the double wheel rear configuration so the model will easily stay on its main wheels and the outriggers not really engaged.

Exclamation Painting the wheels

I used Tamiya Black Rubber paint for the wheels.

Exclamation Landing gear

Here are the main landing gear struts and the wheels assemblies. Very simple and most will not be seen unless the model is turned over.

Nose gear in

rear gear in

Again, note that the built prototype aircraft had a single wheel in the back. This model has a two wheel arrangement.

and both gears

Model is resting on the main landing gear

The outrigger struts are next.

Fine wheels, Isaac! Both the tires and the printed detail.
If I got it well, the model is stable on the single front and double main wheels. That's good because the outrigger struts are surely fragile...

The actual aircraft did perform ground taxi test, but was found to be very unstable. Definitely having a bicycle arrangement with only one wheel in front and one in back will be unstable on the ground at low speeds and the outriggers are too weak to support or prevent the plane swaying. It would have been better if they had double wheels in the back like the other Yak planes like the Yak 25 family. Also, the outriggers should have been attached to the wing tips for better support.
