Very typical of the British pre-war airforce. My dad, who was born in 1928 remembered them from some contemporary aviation mags and he called it a "flying cuckoo clock" or a "flying flower stool".

At the same time he was a fan of the Supermarine Walrus which showed approximately the same "aerodynamic refinement"...

Finally fought my way to the finish line with this bird, battling life all the way. An aerioplane from the 1930's so ugly it is almost pretty.

Also shown are a few shots from a Matchbox 1/72nd scale kit I built a few years back. The contrast sort of points up the difference in the two mediums. While the paper kits may not be as exact they do have a certain air that gives them a beauty all their own.

Love it MS. Well worth the wait. And I'm glad your bristles are long enough too!

Your pics and comment re the comparison of paper and plastic sort of hits home a current thread just started by Falco.

Good work, Michael. It's nice to see it completed. Interesting airplane.
That Heyford is even uglier than LWS-6 Żubr which is our Polish equivalent from the same period(1930s)!

The build was not bad. It is this dayem Life thing that keeps me away from my modeling 'pit. Looking at it now I am proud of this one. Just wish I had gone to town on detailing the open cockpit and gunner's stations. Maybe someday....

It´s all about scale: The bigger, the less difference there is between cardboard and plastic. A well built Halinski WWII fighter model can easily hold it´s own against a plastic kit. This is even more true when you look at the PZL-8 from JSC models in 1/24 scale or the DeHavilland Dragon Rapide by Schreiber Verlag in 1/24. A large model with all of the contours of the real thing and a super detailed engine. O.K., you need more skill and time to come to a satisfying result in paper modeling, but we don´t build to get a model finished. The fun is in the building process itself.

Yes I agree. For some reason I enjoy shrinking down the big ones. I did a 1/33 Nieuport 11 and then a 1/100 version. To me the 1/100 version is just as neat as the big one.
